FOREST WOLVES Climbing along the river’s edge on an overgrown path, after an hour and a half we reached a tiny clearing surrounded by tall trees and elevated above the river. Here we found a pit with the remains of a fire. The place was a convenient one, and we decided to stay there. We were also rather tired. Mitka fossicked around in the fire pit, and found several still-warm baked potatoes. This find did not alarm us, probably there were fishermen in these parts. A little further on, in the bushes, I saw a fine shanty. It was a whole camping ground. We didn’t want to leave this place to go anywhere else, and we also didn’t have any energy to do so.
