WHAT WE SCOFFED, GOBBLED AND GUZZLED Food was the main topic of our life. The dreams of the orphans mainly revolved around food, especially in winter and spring. During that time, as our hobbling lady said, we were liable to eat everything that wasn’t nailed down. In summer we ate weeds, risking catching a colon infection and falling into the clutches of the Absolute Drip. We were fed in the large communal canteen, which we called the scoffery, on the second floor. Six boys sat at each rectangular table. Around the perimeter, there were six green metal mugs, and a seventh in the center, with pieces of rye bread sticking out of it in vertical strips – six pieces.
