THE DEATH OF MITYAI The first time I was able to see my friend Mityai, whom I missed terribly, was not until the end of November. With enormous difficulty I persuaded the colonel himself to allow one of his subordinates to take me to the hospital for a meeting with my blind friend. When we met, we were happy to see each other. After two months of treatment, he felt better. But I was upset to find out that after he was released from hospital, he would not be sent to us, but to a shelter for blind children, and there he would be taught at a special school. The food at the shelter was much better than at our orphanage, and this is important for lung disease patients.
