THE LEDGER The textbooks that I studied from were covered in obscene drawings and swearwords, which meant that I learnt the science of four-letter words from an early age. For writing notes at lessons and doing homework for all the subjects, I was given an enormous thick ledger for the entire year, in a sturdy cardboard binding which was indestructible. This book was divided into several sections on both sides, corresponding to subjects. On one side I wrote down the lessons, on the other I did the homework. In this great book there was a whole section for drawing, where I drew the card deck kings, queens, jacks and leaders, training for my future life. In spring, when the school was over and the time came to flee, I gave this treasure to my sidekicks who stayed behind.
