As she waited, her heart thumping, the door of the carriage was opened and a man looked in. Now he was unmasked and she saw that he had fair hair and blue eyes. She was certain at first glance that she had seen him somewhere before. Then, as he asked with a smile, “Will you please step out?” she remembered. It was the handsome young man who was accompanying the Duke when he had come into Kate Hamilton’s and, having drunk with him at the bar, they had both left the saloon. She felt her heart begin to beat with heavy suffocating strokes. She stretched out her hand and, as she was helped from the carriage to the ground, she heard faintly through the open Church door her father’s music being played on an organ. The young man offered her his arm and, as she held onto it like a lifeline
