The stone marker felt cold under Lila’s fingertips as she traced the haunting words: “Here lies the beginning of all endings.” Her chest tightened with unease, but she couldn’t tear her eyes away.
Ethan crouched beside her, his sharp gaze studying every detail of the marker. “This isn’t just a clue,” he said softly. “It’s a warning.”
Lila swallowed hard, clutching the compass in her palm. Its needle pointed unwaveringly toward the stone, as if demanding action. “Do you think the key...?”
Ethan reached into his pocket, pulling out the ornate key they’d found beneath the oak tree. “It’s worth a try.”
Carefully, he ran his hand along the edge of the marker until he found a small, nearly invisible keyhole carved into the stone. The key slid in effortlessly, and with a quiet click, the ground beneath them trembled.
Lila gasped, stumbling back as the marker shifted, revealing a hidden stairway spiraling downward into darkness. A faint golden glow emanated from below, flickering like a distant flame.
“This is it,” Ethan said, his voice firm but tinged with awe.
Lila gripped his arm. “Are we really going down there?”
Ethan met her gaze, his expression steady. “We’ve come too far to stop now.”
