The orb’s golden light swirled faster, filling the chamber with a hum that seemed to vibrate in their bones. Ethan tightened his grip on Lila’s hand, his mind racing to decipher the riddle.
“One will stay, and one will lose,” he repeated under his breath. “It’s asking us to sacrifice something... but what?”
Lila’s voice was shaky as she replied, “Maybe it’s not about losing each other. What if it’s about letting go of something else—our fear, our doubts?”
Ethan shook his head. “What if it’s literal? What if one of us has to stay here to break the curse?”
The thought hit Lila like a blow to the chest. “No. There has to be another way. We’ve come too far to be torn apart now.”
The orb pulsed brighter, and the voice returned, louder and more commanding: “The bond you share will be tested. Prove your love, or let the curse remain.”
Suddenly, the ground beneath them trembled, and two glowing symbols appeared at their feet. One resembled a heart, radiating warmth; the other, a chain, exuding cold.
Lila looked up at Ethan, her voice steady despite the storm inside her. “We’ll face this together. No matter what.”
Ethan nodded, his resolve matching hers. “Together, always.”
They stepped forward, each placing a hand on the glowing symbols.
