Episode 12: The Compass

231 Words
The golden compass sat in Lila’s hands, its ornate carvings catching the last rays of sunlight. The needle spun wildly at first, but then began to slow, jerking in one direction before steadying. “It’s not pointing north,” Ethan murmured, leaning in to examine it. “It’s leading us somewhere.” Lila frowned, her fingers tightening around the compass. “But where? And why does it feel... alive?” Ethan pulled out the note from the chest again, rereading the cryptic words: “The compass will guide you. Trust your hearts to find the way.” “Maybe it’s reacting to us,” he said thoughtfully. “Let’s see where it leads.” Lila hesitated, then nodded. Slowly, she held the compass out and began walking. The needle shifted as she moved, pointing toward the thick brush near the edge of the clearing. The air grew cooler, tinged with the scent of damp earth. “Here,” Lila said, stopping. She knelt, brushing aside tangled vines to reveal something beneath—a flat stone marker embedded in the ground. Ethan crouched beside her, clearing away more dirt and moss. The marker bore an inscription: “Here lies the beginning of all endings.” Lila’s breath hitched. “This... this is it, isn’t it?” Ethan nodded, his jaw tight. “We’re standing at the threshold of something much bigger.”
