Lila couldn’t take her eyes off the sketch. The likeness was uncanny, as if someone had frozen a moment of her life centuries ago. “Where did you get this?” she asked, her voice barely audible. Ethan hesitated. “It was in an old collection I was cataloging for the university. At first, I thought it was just another artifact, but then I saw the name written on the back.” He turned the parchment over, and there it was, written in elegant script: Lila Arden. Her knees felt weak, and she sank into the nearest chair. “This doesn’t make sense,” she murmured. “How can my name be on something so old?” “That’s what I’ve been trying to figure out,” Ethan said, sitting across from her. “The journal you have—it’s part of the same collection. They were found together, along with a legend about two lovers cursed to be separated in every lifetime.” Lila’s heart pounded. “Cursed?” Ethan nodded. “It’s said they’re given one chance to break the cycle. If they fail, they lose each other forever... until the next lifetime.” The room felt impossibly still as his words sank in. “And you think we’re... them?” Ethan’s stormy eyes met hers. “I don’t just think, Lila. I know.”
