Our Days Are Numbered

Chapter 2

We slowly edged our way to the stairs, the sound of glass breaking was being more and more frequent. I looked back to see that one Eater was now fully through, although the one that had its hand through the glass wasn’t far behind.

"We need to move faster that fucker is going to smell us out then we are screwed" I whispered 

"Cant" Devin hissed when we got to a bolted door. I let out a huff and grabbed the dead bolt pulling it open with a clang that echoed louder than it seemed possible. f**k. 

'Move it!" I pushed the two through the door as the eaters all forced their way in towards the source of the noise. the snarling and groaning getting closer and closer as I tried to pull the heavy door closed behind me. There was no way to close the door from here we had to run as fast as we could before the eaters figured out that the door could be moved. 

"How many" shouted Alice as we ran up the stairs 

"Six" I shouted back "probably more on the way"  The noise coming from in the shop was echoing around us, 

"Definitely more" Devin muttered, a crash catching our attention as we reached the roof. "Guess they decided to go right through the door," Devin said trying to suppress a smile

"Ha Ha," I said grabbing something out of my bag and holding it in my hand. I ran towards the front of the shop and looked down to try and locate the jeep. Yip, there were definitely more on the way and they were all around the car. I looked back at the other two. wiggling my nose while I thought of a plan.

"Start climbing down I'm going to create a distraction or two" Alice moved over to the fire escape but Devin hadn't moved at all

"Please don't argue I'm a hell of a lot faster than you start climbing," I said pushing past him, he grabbed my arm and pulled me to him, and planted his lips on mine. 

"Stay ahead of the pack" he whispered as I bolted to the other side of the roof. I pulled the ring from the grenade that I was holding and threw it as hard as I could. A massive boom sounded causing me to cover my ears, as I ducked down. Loud snarls and growling were moving rapidly. I looked down again to see the eaters that were on the ground were all moving towards the blast. The ones that were in the stair well unfortunately were beginning to spill out onto the roof. I picked myself up scanning for the most direct but safest way back to the fire escape. f**k it. I let out a breath and started running, zigzagging through the eaters as they stumbled out the doorway. I reached the fire escape when I heard a snarl come from behind me. I ducked quickly to see an eater as it swung at me. I darted to the edge of the roof looking for another way down. Alice and Devin were already back in the Jeep. But the eaters were already on their way back. I ran to the other side as the eaters followed. I looked up and without thinking, jumped. 

“For f**k sakes, I  moaned as I hung onto the next roof, sometimes I really hated being so damn short. I pulled myself up onto the roof of the next building. Okay now, what? I watched as the eaters reached for me some overreaching and dropping like stones. I heard the roar of the jeep's engine come flying around the corner, Devin must have seen me jump. I ran towards the fire escape and started climbing down.

Alice POV

So this went from OK to horrible in 3.5 seconds. the massive boom had caused the fire escape to shake sending me to the ground and landing on my ass, Devin had jumped off after me somehow landing on his feet. I looked at this god of a man, and couldn't help but stare a little too long. He extended his hand to help me up. we both made a run for the Jeep, getting in and waiting for Zoni to get back to us. Time was ticking by and I noticed that Devin was getting fidgety. I opened the sun roof and saw that Lilith was still on the roof, she was running to the other side

"f**k" Devin's sudden booming voice had me flinch and sit back down as he put the car into gear and sped off in the direction that Zoni had gone. She was now standing on the roof of the next building.

"Wait, did she jump?" I asked, gobsmacked that she even made it. Devin slowed as I popped out the sun roof again and directed him as she ran across the roof. "Over there, the fire escape" I pointed sitting back down in the seat. Devin pulled under the last bit of the caged ladder. There was a small thud on the roof,

"GO" came Zoni's voice as thudding and scratching came along the sides of the Jeep 

Zoni's POV 

I held onto the roof mounts as the car pulled off with a speed. lowering my head as the wind hit against my face. I slowly started making my way towards the open sun roof as Devin tried to keep steady on the broken-up roads. I pulled myself through the sun roof and landed on the back seat. Alice gave out a small squeak.

"You good" Devin asked looking back In the mirror 

"Yeah" I replied pulling the bag out from under me and sprawling out on the back seat. "I'm perfect" I huffed
