Chapter 10 – Echoes Through the Darkness
** A few days ago - inside a cave in Bravadis **
Nae, the younger sister felt a wave of fear and sadness wash over her as she huddled in the dark cave, but she knew she couldn't let it consume her. There were people counting on her to find a way out of this situation. She couldn't let herself think about her sister fighting off the Unmar man, or her grandmother's lifeless body left on the cold ground. No, she had to focus on survival, on finding a way out of this cave and back to safety. She took a deep breath and tried to steady her nerves, reminding herself that she was strong and capable. She would find a way out of this, no matter what it took.
Fae had taken Nae to the cave once before, when they were young and curious. As they explored the damp, dark cave, Fae suddenly stopped and recited a short poem, "A path through the darkness, a light through the fog. Follow the echoes, and you'll find the way out." Nae had been impressed with her sister's knowledge and ability to navigate through the cave. Fae had then explained that she had learned the poem from their grandmother, who used to tell it to her when she was a child. She had memorized it and practiced it every time she visited the cave, so she would never forget the way out. Nae had been fascinated and had made Fae promise to teach her the poem, just in case they ever needed to find their way out. Now, as she sat alone in the cave, Nae clung to the memory of Fae's voice reciting the poem, hoping it would lead her to safety.
Nae's heart raced as she heard the sound of footsteps growing louder and closer. She knew it was the Unmar soldiers, and they needed to find a place to hide. She quickly scanned the walls around her and remembered a secret room nearby that Fae had shown her before.
Without hesitation, she motioned for the others to follow her and led them to a spot where the stones looked different. Nae pushed against the wall with all her might, and after a moment of resistance, the circular door gave way and swung open.
The room inside was small, but it was better than being caught by soldiers. They quickly filed inside, and Nae pushed the circular door closed behind them, making sure to lock it securely.
Breathless and shaking with fear, the young lady realized that they were safe even if it's just for the moment.
As Nae and the others huddle in the secret room, they hear the muffled voices of the guards outside. Nae motioned for everyone to stay silent as she pressed her ear against the circular door, trying to make out what they were saying.
After a few tense moments, the voices became clearer. "Let's leave," one guard said. "They are probably gone. The city has already fallen."
Nae nods to herself, relieved to hear the guards' words but also heartbroken. She turns back to the group and motions for them to follow her. They move quietly and cautiously, following her lead towards the secret room. Once they reach it, Nae positions herself in front of the circular door and begins to push it in a circular motion. She felt the resistance at first, but with a bit more force, the door finally gave way and slid open.
"Let's go," she whispers. "We need to move quickly and quietly." The group nods in agreement, and they start to make their way out of the secret room, following Nae's lead once again. As they move, Nae can feel the weight of responsibility on her shoulders. She knew she needed to keep everyone safe and lead them out of here, even if it meant pushing her own fears and worries aside.
The young woman walked ahead, leading the group out of the cave. She had done this countless times before, but this time was different. The group she was leading was much larger than usual. They were young children, elderly people, and even babies that needed to be carried. What was supposed to be a quick 20-minute walk out of the cave turned into a much longer journey. Nae tried her best to keep the group moving, but she saw the exhaustion and fear on their faces. They had to keep going, no matter what.
Nae led the group through the winding tunnels of the cave, her mind focused solely on the task at hand. After what seemed like an eternity, they finally reached the exit. She climbed up to reach the trapdoor in the ceiling and pushed it open, revealing a vast expanse of sand dunes that stretched out as far as the eye could see. The group behind her gasped in awe at the sight before them.
Despite the destruction and chaos that lay behind them, Nae felt a sense of relief wash over her as she looked out at the open desert. They were out of the cave, and that was a small victory in itself.
But her moment of respite was short-lived, as she quickly refocused her attention on helping the others climb up and out of the trapdoor. The elderly struggled, and the babies cried, but Nae remained patient and determined, lending a helping hand wherever it was needed.
As she surveyed the group of survivors around her, she knew that their journey was far from over. They still had to cross the treacherous desert, find shelter and safety, and rebuild their lives from the ashes of their city. But for now, they were out of the cave, and that was enough to keep Nae's spirits high.
She looked out at the horizon, and all she could see was a desolate wasteland. The city that was once bustling with life was now nothing but ruins and ash. Nae felt a deep sense of sadness as she watched it, but she had to put her own emotions aside and focus on getting her people to safety.
Nae took charge and started to lead them towards Najariyah. It was a long journey, but she was determined to get everyone to safety.
As they walked, Nae thought about her own fears and worries. What would happen to her people now that their city was destroyed? How would they survive in this harsh and unforgiving environment? But she pushed those thoughts aside and focused on the task at hand. She knew that she had to be strong for her people and do whatever it takes to keep them safe.
As they continued their journey, they suddenly heard the sound of hooves approaching them. Nae turned to look and saw a group of bandits on horses, surrounding them. The bandits, armed with swords and bows, demanded that they hand over all their belongings.
Theybarely had anything of value. They had any time to carry many of their belongings as the city was being attacked. One of the bandits noticed the golden necklace the young leader was wearing. He pointed at it, demanding that she hand it over. Nae refused, gripping the necklace tightly in her hand.
"Give us your belongings, and maybe we'll let you live," one of the bandits growled, pointing his sword at the group. Nae's heart raced, she simply could not give up this necklace. It was her late mother's necklace, the last memory she had of her.
Nae hesitated for a moment, clutching the necklace tightly in her hand. She couldn't bear to part with it, but she also couldn't risk the lives of her companions. Finally, she shook her head and whispered, "I can't give it to you."
As the bandits advanced, their swords glinting menacingly, they were determined to snatch the necklace from Nae's neck. But just as their hands were about to close around the precious item, something extraordinary occurred. Nae's eyes, once a calm shade, suddenly blazed with a vibrant yellow glow, illuminating the dim surroundings. Simultaneously, the necklace hanging around her neck began to emit a brilliant, golden light, intensifying with each passing moment.
A surge of power coursed through Nae, and with a fierce determination, she unleashed the energy in a radiant burst. The bandits were hit with an overwhelming force, propelled backward by the sheer intensity of Nae's yellow glow. They stumbled, disoriented, their faces contorted in shock and fear.
Nae's voice cut through the tension, sharp and commanding. "Stay away!" she screamed, her words laced with authority and an otherworldly echo. The bandits, struck by both her power and her unwavering resolve, hesitated for a moment before turning on their heels. With fear in their eyes, they fled without looking back, desperate to escape the extraordinary force that Nae had summoned to protect herself and her precious possession.
Nae herself was trembling and staring at the necklace, her eyes wide with disbelief.
"What just happened?" a woman asked, looking at the necklace in awe.
"I don't know," Nae replied, still shaken. "I've never seen anything like that before."
After this frightening moment, the group continued on their journey, with Nae keeping a tight grip on the necklace.
Her mind wandered to her mother. She had always felt a sense of loss and emptiness, never knowing much about the woman who gave birth to her. But now, she felt a strange connection to her mother through the necklace. She couldn't explain it, but she knew that it was more than just a simple piece of jewelry.
They continued their journey towards Najariyah and Nae couldn't help but feel a sense of relief and pride wash over her. She had managed to keep the group safe from the Unmar men and the bandits, and now they were just a few miles away from their destination.
As they approached Najariyah, they could see the walls of the kingdom from a small distance. The walls were grand and made of red sandstone. They towered over the surrounding landscape, stretching high into the sky. Nae and the group felt relief wash over them as they knew they were close to safety.
Walking closer, they could see from far away the bustling activity of people entering and leaving the kingdom. They heard the sounds of merchants selling their wares and the chatter of the people going about their daily lives. It was a stark contrast to the desolation they had just left behind.
Nae and the group quickened their pace, eager to finally reach their destination and find a place to rest. As they entered the kingdom, they were greeted by the grandeur of the architecture and the vibrancy of the people. They had finally made it to Najariyah.
