Council member Jao reclined in his opulent quarters, the glow from the hearth casting long, flickering shadows across the room. His trusted servant stood by, attentive and silent, as Jao indulged in a rare moment of candid reflection.
"I came from nothing, you know," Jao began, his voice heavy with a mix of pride and bitterness. "A common merchant’s son, clawing my way through the ranks. And now, here I am—one of the top council members, one of the three closest advisors to the king." He paused, a sly smile creeping across his face. "But this... this is not enough. I crave more. I need to be at the heart of power. No, I need the power itself."
The servant remained impassive, though his eyes flickered with understanding. Jao’s ambition was well-known to those who served him, and they had all benefited from his ruthless ascent to power.
"Nicholas," Jao spat the name with disdain. "That arrogant prince he’s the biggest obstacle in my path. He refuses to bend, refuses to follow the council’s lead. And now, with the kingdom potentially under threat, he’s more interested in playing the hero than in securing the future."
Jao began pacing, his mind whirring with plans. "But I have a way to neutralize him. My niece—sweet, naive thing that she is—still possesses the kind of beauty that could capture any man’s eye, even that of a dragon prince. If he could be convinced to take her as his fiancée, Jao would have a direct line to the throne."
The servant, keenly aware of the stakes, nodded. "And once she's in place, we can control him from within."
"Precisely," Jao said, his smile widening. "But that’s only part of the plan. I need to create a distraction, something that will weaken his hold on the throne. The lycans... those beasts are the perfect tool. I’ll reach out to them, stir up their rogue factions, and set them loose. They’ll create enough chaos to keep Nicholas occupied while I maneuver my niece into his life."
He paused, narrowing his eyes as he considered the implications. "Nicholas is no fool, and his friends those generals are sharp. They’re close-knit, and they’ll be watching for any sign of weakness. But they don’t know what I know. They’re still in the dark about my true intentions."
Sensing an opportunity, the servant stepped forward slightly. "And what if they suspect something? If they dig too deep?"
Jao’s expression hardened. "They won’t. The existence of the she-dragon is known only to Nicholas and his closest allies. They’ve kept it hidden, perhaps thinking it’s their secret weapon. But it’s not my concern, not yet. For now, the she-dragon is nothing more than a myth. Our focus must remain on Nicholas. Once he’s ensnared by my niece and distracted by the chaos in the kingdom, I’ll make my move."
Jao turned back to the mirror, his reflection a picture of cold ambition. "By the time they realize what’s happening, it will be too late. Nicholas will be out of the way, and the throne will be mine."
The room fell silent, save for the crackling of the fire. Jao’s laughter broke the stillness, low and sinister, as he reveled in his growing power. The pieces were falling into place, and soon, the game would be his to win.
