Chapter 7: The Unexpected Encounter

Nicholas and his friends—Alaric, Caelum, and Valen—were deep in the heart of the forest. The rugged terrain was just what they had hoped for, a real challenge. But after two days of steep inclines, dense underbrush, and rocky pathways, even they were starting to feel the adventure had lost its edge. “This is starting to feel like a nature walk, not an adventure,” Alaric grumbled, kicking a rock down the path. “Agreed,” Caelum chimed in. “Where’s the danger? The mystical creatures? All I’ve seen are squirrels and one very confused deer.” Valen smirked, adjusting his pack. “Maybe the creatures are on vacation. They heard we were coming and decided to avoid the embarrassment.” Nicholas shook his head, amused by their banter. “Let’s set up camp here,” he suggested. “Maybe something interesting will happen if we just stay put.” They began setting up camp, falling into an easy rhythm of tasks. Just as they were settling down, the stillness of the forest was shattered by a distant scream. The sound was unmistakable—pure, raw terror. Nicholas stiffened, instantly alert. “Did you hear that?” “Sounds like our boredom just ended,” Valen said, his eyes lighting up with excitement. “Finally, something interesting,” Caelum added, already moving in the direction of the noise. They sprinted toward the source of the screams, the growls and snarls growing louder as they neared. Exchanging quick glances, they realized this wasn’t just some lost hikers. Bursting through the trees into a clearing, they skidded to a halt. A battle was unfolding before them, but it wasn’t what they had expected. A young woman was fighting off a pack of rogue lycans—vicious, hulking creatures that shouldn’t have been anywhere near this realm. “Is that…?” Alaric started, his voice trailing off in disbelief. Nicholas didn’t need to hear the rest. His eyes were locked on the woman in the midst of the fray. She wasn’t just any woman—she was a dragon, half-transformed, scales gleaming under the moonlight as she fought with a ferocity that was both mesmerizing and terrifying. But it was clear she was running out of energy, and the lycans, sensing her weakness, were closing in. “Didn’t see that coming,” Valen muttered, sounding both impressed and concerned. “What are lycans doing here?” Caelum asked, his tone serious. “They never cross realms.” “Forget why they’re here,” Nicholas snapped, drawing his sword. “We need to take them out before they tear her apart.” The four of them sprang into action with the precision and skill that only years of elite training could bring. Nicholas went straight for the nearest lycan, cutting it down with a single, powerful strike. Alaric and Caelum flanked him, their movements fluid and deadly as they engaged the other creatures. Valen, always the strategist, took a more calculated approach, targeting the lycans’ weak spots with deadly accuracy. Within minutes, the fight was over. The last of the lycans fell, its snarls turning into a pitiful whimper before it collapsed to the ground. Nicholas wiped the sweat from his brow, his breath coming in heavy gasps. But his gaze was already on the woman, who had dropped to her knees, her strength finally giving out. The adrenaline was still coursing through him, but Nicholas felt a strange sense of awe as he approached her. He had never seen another dragon, let alone a female one, in his entire life. And here she was, in the middle of the forest, fighting off creatures that shouldn’t even exist in this realm. Before he could reach her, a group of park rangers burst into the clearing, looking alarmed and relieved. One of them, Grant, who Nicholas recognized from past excursions, rushed forward, assessing the situation. “Everyone okay?” Grant asked, pulling out his radio to call for backup. “What the hell happened here?” “We handled the problem,” Valen said casually, sheathing his sword. “You’re welcome.” “Thank you, Captain Obvious,” Caelum added with a smirk. “But seriously, what were these things doing here?” Nicholas knelt beside the woman, who was now fully human again, unconscious but alive. “She’s a dragon,” he said quietly, more to himself than to anyone else. “A she-dragon.” Alaric crouched next to him, examining her with a mixture of curiosity and concern. “You don’t see that every day. Do you think she’s connected to the royal family?” “Doubt it,” Caelum replied, looking around at the c*****e. “If she was, we’d have known about her. This is a big deal, though. We need answers.” The rangers were already calling in the military to deal with the lycan bodies, as their presence in this realm was a serious breach of security. Meanwhile, the park’s emergency team was tending to the other hikers, all of whom had sustained minor injuries during the chase. Nicholas stood up, his gaze still fixed on the unconscious woman. “Once these creatures are dealt with, I’m going to talk to her. I need to know who she is and why she’s here.” Valen clapped him on the back, grinning. “And here we thought this trip was going to be boring. Looks like you’re about to have a very interesting conversation, Your Highness.” Nicholas rolled his eyes, though he couldn’t help but smile. “Just don’t let me catch you telling the council about this. They’ll have a field day with it.” “Who, us? Gossip?” Alaric said, feigning innocence. “Never.” “Not unless there’s a good reason,” Caelum added with a wink. As the military team arrived to take the lycans away, Nicholas knew that whatever happened next, his life—and possibly his kingdom—was about to change in ways he hadn’t anticipated. The discovery of a she-dragon, especially one as powerful as this woman, was bound to send ripples through their world. And Nicholas was determined to get to the bottom of it. But for now, he couldn’t deny the thrill of finally having something truly interesting to deal with. As he looked back at the clearing, a nagging thought tugged at his mind. The battle had been fierce, but it wasn’t over yet. Something about this encounter felt unfinished, like a story with a missing chapter. He had to find out why this she-dragon was here, and what it meant for them all.
