The phone slipped from Layla’s trembling hands as she stared at the message she never meant to send.
“I still love you.”
She hadn’t typed those words—at least, not recently. They were buried in a draft from months ago, back when memories of Arman still burned bright in her chest. She had meant to delete it. Somehow, her fingers must have brushed Send in that fragile moment of insomnia.
Now it was too late.
She stared at the screen, waiting-dreading-a reply. But nothing came. The three blinking dots that usually meant he was typing remained absent. The silence was deafening.
She paced across her tiny apartment, her bare feet cold against the tiled floor. The city outside continued to breathe and move, but time inside her walls had frozen.
Why hadn’t he answered?
Maybe he had changed numbers. Maybe he read it and laughed. Maybe he was lying next to someone else—someone who wasn’t haunted by mistakes and might-have-beens.
A sharp knock at the door jolted her out of her spiral.
Layla froze.
It was almost midnight. No one ever came by this late.
She crept to the door and peeked through the peephole. No one. Just the empty hallway.
Her phone buzzed behind her.
Heart pounding, she rushed to it.
1 new message.
Arman: “We need to talk.”
Her breath caught.
That was all it said. No emojis. No warmth. No anger either.
Just… a weight.
She reread it a dozen times, trying to hear the tone behind the words. Was it a warning? A confession? A beginning—or an end?
Outside, thunder rolled in the distance. Rain began tapping against her windows, soft at first, then heavier. Like the world was exhaling everything it had held back.
Layla sat on the edge of her bed, thumbs hovering over her phone.
And for the first time in months, she didn’t feel numb.
She felt something dangerous.
Hope.
