Death Certificate Issued

The meeting was finally over, and people slowly walked out of the meeting room. I could finally breathe again. But the air still carried the lingering scent of Susanna’s perfume—soft, yet oddly aggressive. I couldn’t help but touch my arm, where goosebumps had popped up. She had been staring at me the whole time, and it made me feel... uneasy. Why was she acting like that? I didn’t even do anything. I wanted to escape that suffocating room immediately, but I had to wait for everyone else to leave so I could clean up the cups and glasses. It’s part of my job as an assistant, even though I didn’t exactly come here to be a real assistant. “Haven't seen you for a long time. Don’t you miss me at all?” Susanna laughed, putting her fingers on Richard’s tie. Her fingers slid over the fabric, like a snake ready to strike. “Hey, not here.” Richard said, gently pulling his tie away. “Let’s go to my office.” As they left, I finally let out a sigh of relief, wiping the sweat off my palms. But I didn’t have time to think carefully of it. There was something strange about this woman, and I needed to focus on other things. After cleaning up the meeting room, I walked past the CEO’s office. Through the glass door, I saw Susanna sitting on the desk in front of Richard, chatting with him casually, as if she owned the place. Richard was just listening, nodding occasionally, but it didn’t look like he was trying to get rid of her. Whatever they were talking about, it didn’t concern me. I quickly made my way to my own office. Finally, I could start arranging my things. This was the first time I was sitting in my office chair. The company, oh yes,—the chair was so nice, it almost made me want to nap. Not like Professor Michael McGriff's office, where every time he assigned work, I could feel my back stiffen from the hard chair. I opened my handbag, took out a small brick-red leather box, and quickly out its contents into the drawer: holy water, a cross, and two silver daggers of different sizes. I opened the lowest drawer of my desk to check—it was deep enough to hide a small knife. On my desk was a water plant. I picked up the bottle and replaced the normal water with holy water. Then, if anyone touched it, I’d know right away. Then, I placed a mirror on the desk. It looked like a normal mirror, but if some “people” didn’t cast a clear reflection, that would be... interesting. Lastly, I pulled out a small black leather book from my bag and hid it among the books on the shelf. The cover said “The Bible” in gold embossing. Mission accomplished!!! Well, almost. I quickly opened my laptop and typed “Susanna Lynch” into the search bar. A few seconds later, the search results popped up. Susanna Lynch, Marketing Department of the Langston Group. In 2020, she was sent to Europe as the Executive Vice President of the Marketing Department, based in Munich, Germany. She has a tangled history with Richard Langston, the CEO of the pharmaceutical giant. Everyone thought they were the perfect couple. Richard rarely had scandals, and Susanna was the only girlfriend he ever admitted to. But they broke up in 2019, and Susanna moved to Europe to further her career. That’s what Google had to say. Alright, this story sounds like a typical office romance—breakup, move away, come back... No wonder it felt like there was more between them than just business. The way she acted earlier? She’s probably back to rebuild connections with him. But then, why the hostility towards me? Could it be that just being Richard’s assistant, always around him, makes her suspicious? Is she back for Richard... or for something else? I quickly forwarded the information to Michael with a short message: “Susanna Lynch is back.” Lunchtime. “So, how’s your first day going?” Jerry asked, chewing on her pasta, her words muffled. “Busy, running around all the morning.” I sighed, stretching. “By the way, everyone’s gossiping about it today—did you hear? The CEO’s ex is back. True or not?” Jerry lowered her voice, with her eyes practically sparkling with gossip. “Yeah, it’s true,” I frowned as I remembered the suffocating atmosphere from earlier. “She walked in like she owns the place.” “Shh, quiet!” Jerry giggled, but then scanned the room cautiously to make sure no one was eavesdropping. “I didn’t join the company when she left, but I’ve heard the rumors. They say she told everyone she never wanted to see Richard again! Tough woman!” She said she never wanted to see Richard again? Then why did she come back? I was about to ask more when I spotted Richard and Susanna casually walking into the cafeteria, laughing and chatting like old friends. It looked like they were picking up where they left off, or maybe even getting closer again. I quickly asked Jerry, “Wait, does the CEO eat in the cafeteria often?” “Whoa, pigs must be flying,” Jerry said, looking excited. “I never saw him in the cafeteria. And that’s Susanna Lynch, right? She’s even more stunning in person.” I observed Susanna across the room. “By the way, do any of the executives often eat here?” I asked. This could be a good clue, after all—vampires don’t need human food and usually don’t frequent human cafeterias unless necessary. “Let me think... well, the big bosses don’t come often. They can eat in fancier places, you know. Sometimes they’re out of the office for meetings. But yeah, Thomas and Lott sometimes show up.” Vice President Thomas Lake and Marketing Director Lott Westwood. Noted. After lunch, I returned to my desk and saw a new message from Michael on my phone. “Susanna Lynch, born in Munich on January 1989. Moved to London in 2011 and joined Langston Group in 2013. She dated Richard Langston for three years and was about to divorce her husband in Germany... But before she finalized the divorce, her husband and child mysteriously disappeared. The police couldn’t find anything, and the case was closed. She broke up with Richard and returned to Europe in 2019.” “Wait, how did you find out all this before my gossiping colleagues?” I teased. “You’re like an expert at digging up secrets.” “We’ve investigated this person a little bit before. But since she left London, we stopped.” Michael simply replied. Her husband and child disappeared mysteriously? But Google doesn’t show any of that. If her husband was human... then what about her kid? She’s back—did she really come to reconnect with Richard, or is there more to it? “This story’s getting weirder.” I quickly typed back to Michael. “Keep an eye on her. But don’t act rashly,” Michael responded. I leaned back in my chair, thinking. Clearly, Susanna should be observed closely, but Michael doesn’t even seem to fully figure out how dangerous she might be. Guess I’ll have to stay extra cautious. “Alright, I’ll get back to work. Richard will fly to Durham tomorrow, I’ll book his flight.” I typed that, about to set my phone down. “Okay, but don’t forget, you’re not just his assistant,” Michael reminded me. “You’re my vampire hunter.” I laughed, shaking my head, and throw my phone aside. Time to get back to work. Just then, my mailbox pinged with a new email, the subject line reading: “Personnel Record Update: Susanne Polzin” Who is that? A new employee? I opened the attachment casually. The first page had a photo of a woman—familiar, with pretty features and a standard smile. Susanna Lynch??? I sat straight, approaching my head to the screen. I instinctively flipped to the next page, my eyes widening in shock. “27th September 2017, death certificate issued.”
