I signed the contract

When I walked into the office for my interview, I felt uncertain. I don’t like interviews that need me to do stupid self-introduction, The interview room was small, and behind the desk sat a familiar face—Jerry Wong, my old college classmate. “It’s you?” I blinked in surprise. Jerry glanced up, then a big grin appeared on her lips, her fingers already tapping away at the keyboard. “Small world, huh?” But my shock quickly turned into suspicion. There was no real interview, no standard questions—she was directly entering my details into the system, as if my hiring had already been decided. I frowned slightly. “Hmmm, aren’t you supposed to at least ask about my experience, or—?” “You’ve been chosen,” Jerry cut me off, lowering her voice. A flicker of something unusual crossed her expression. “Just remember one rule—act like a normal employee after you start your job.” My heart thudded. “Am... I not like a normal employee now?” “You are.” She laughed. “But, you mean… a bunch of not-so-normal people pretending to be normal in this company?” I tried to ask more. Jerry hesitated, then quickly glanced at the door as if making sure no one was listening. She coughed lightly and slid a contract across the desk. “I don’t know anything. I’m just HR. But someone went out of their way to recommend you. The referral fee is generous. So I don't need to ask you anything else but directly hire you.” I took the contract, my eyes skimming through the terms. Most of it looked standard—except for the last line in small print: Once signed, the employee must fully comply with the employer and under no circumstances resign. My fingers tightened around the paper. No circumstances? What's this? “By the way, Bernice,” Jerry suddenly smirked, her tone playful. “Do you have a rich boyfriend doing everything for you? That's so lucky. It's hard to find a nice job now.” “...What?” The sudden shift in topic confused me. But then I realized—she probably knew nothing about my real mission. I forced a laugh. “No, no, that’s just my… mentor at university. He doesn’t want me to be unemployed after graduation, so he promised to help to me find this job and he recommended me here. But I really don't know he used this way.” Puh, so hard to make a story. Jerry shrugged, clearly unconvinced, but she didn’t press further. I lowered my gaze, staring at the contract once more. Something was wrong. My gut feeling. “Under no circumstances resign.” Why? But in the end, I still picked up the pen and signed my name. One week later, I arrived at Langston Group, dressed in a fitted suit, high heels clicking against the polished floors. The glass-walled skyscraper gleamed under the morning sun, like a castle in the clouds. Wow, London’s sunny today. A miracle! A good weather to observe if there were any vampires. Inside my black handbag was a discreet set of hunter’s tools—just in case. "Bernice, the new assistant?" The receptionist greeted me with a professional smile as she handed me my ID badge. "88th floor, straight up." 88th floor. Ridiculously high for an office building. I wanted to complain about it already last week, when I came to the 86th floor for the interview. I stepped into the elevator, pressing the button. The space was silent except for soft background music. As the elevator shot upward, the pressure in my ears increased. If I had to ride this thing every day, I needed to figure out his true identity soon—and then get the hell out. Ding! The doors slid open, revealing a spacious office in the mid of the hallway. Beyond the massive windows, London’s skyline stretched endlessly. And there he was. Richard Langston. Tall, powerful, representing an effortless authority. His tailored suit fit perfectly, and his blue eyes… deep, unreadable, like a predator sizing up his prey. When our eyes met, a strange tension flooded in my stomach. He had me at Hello. I adjusted my posture and forced a polite smile. "Good morning, Mr. Langston." His gaze lingered on me for a moment, sharp and assessing. Then, he smiled slightly. "Welcome." He extended his hand. A handshake? No. My hunter training was clear—high-ranking vampires could extract memories through direct skin contact. I subtly shifted, turning my gesture into a slight nod instead. "Looking forward to working with you." His eyes flickered. Then, an imperceptible smile played on his lips—like he had noticed my hesitation. "My last assistant was excellent," Richard said casually with deep and magnetic voice. "Unfortunately, she had… an accident. That's why we have you now." The air suddenly felt heavier. A chill crept down my spine, but I kept my expression calm and steady. An accident? What kind of accident? Did she die? Or… "I hope you won’t disappoint me, the HR team recommend you strongly, I trust their judgement." Richard added, his voice carrying an unmistakable undertone of warning. I swallowed, with my fingers tightening around my handbag. I need to be careful. I have already been busy on the first day of my work before knowing where is my office. Thirty minutes later, I followed Richard into the top-floor meeting room. Executives came in one by one, each looking sharp and full of energy in this sunny morning. Nobody reacted strongly to the sunshine. As the CEO’s new assistant, it was my job to prepare drinks. I quickly tried to memorize their preferences—grapefruit juice for Richard, red wine for the Vice President Thomas Lake, coffee for the IT Director Christian Fenster, orange juice for the Marketing Director Bridget Goodnote... Keeping track of all these details wasn’t exactly easy. Just as Richard picked up his documents, ready to begin the meeting— The doors suddenly swung open. A sharp click-clack of high heels echoed through the room, accompanied by a faint but unmistakably rich fragrance. "Apologies. I’m late." A woman's voice. Everyone turned instinctively. She was stunning. A long, light gray coat hugged her elegant figure. Crimson lips contrasted starkly against flawless porcelain skin. Golden curls cascaded over her shoulders. Striking, seductive eyes. She didn’t look at anyone. Instead, she intruded forward, her presence commanding, and took a seat directly across from Richard. Tension rippled through the room. "Susanna." Richard finally lifted his gaze, his voice slow, calm. There was a hint of surprise, but no real emotion—like he had already expected her arrival. Who was this woman? What was her relationship with Richard? And more importantly—why did she radiate the same sense of danger as him? My fingers curled tighter around my handbag under the table. Inside, my concealed weapons rested. The hunter in me knew—this was not just an ordinary meeting. The real game was only just beginning.
