Chapter 1

1212 Words
Makayla’s POV I knelt before my uncle, the weight of grief and fear seemed unbearable. My mother's death and my brother's disappearance had left me shattered, and I had hoped that my family would offer some solace in these trying times. But my uncle's indifference only deepened the pain in my heart. I couldn't shake off the memories of that dreadful attack on our pack. It happened so suddenly, chaos engulfed us, and I feared for my brother's safety. Did he manage to escape? Was he still alive? Questions without answers haunted my mind. Yet, here I was, facing my uncle, desperately pleading not to be cast out from my own home. But it seemed like my pleas fell on deaf ears. My cousin, Donna, whom I once considered a friend, showed nothing but aggression. She pushed me away, a cruel gesture that amplified my sense of rejection. The man my uncle had chosen for me as my mate was not my fated one, and I couldn't accept that. Love should be based on destiny, a deep connection that binds two souls, not a decision forced upon us. The moon Goddess had told me he wasn’t my fated mate. I should be patient—my mate is closer than I thought. I mustered the strength to voice my feelings, my tears flowing uncontrollably. "I can't marry a man I don't love or the moon Goddess hadn’t chosen for me, Uncle," I cried out, my voice trembling with emotion. "He's not my destined mate, and I won't betray my heart for the sake of your convenience." But my uncle's response was harsh and heartless. He didn't listen to my reasoning; instead, he insulted me and treated me as a burden to his pack which my mother used to be the Luna of the pack before she was killed. It was as if the bond of family meant nothing to him, and my pain was inconsequential. “You are leaving this palace tonight! I don’t care if you’d get eaten by another rogue but you’re leaving tonight you ungrateful w***e. No wonder your mother was killed.” The weight of his words crushed my spirit, but I knew deep within me that I couldn't abandon who I truly was for the sake of appeasing him. I would not compromise my beliefs and my heart's desires, even if it meant leaving the only home I had ever known. With tears still streaming down my face, I stood up, my resolve firm. "If I am a liability, then I shall leave," I said, trying to maintain some semblance of strength. "But I won't forsake my identity and my heart's yearnings. I'll find my own path, even if it means leaving behind everything I once cherished." As I turned away from my uncle and the pack that had now turned its back on me, I knew the journey ahead would be arduous and uncertain. But I also knew that I couldn't suppress the fire within me, the passion for living life on my own terms. And so, with heavy steps and a heavy heart, I set forth into the unknown, determined to forge my destiny and find the place where I truly belonged. No longer bound by the chains of tradition and expectation, I would discover my true self and embrace the freedom to love and be loved as my heart desired. As I stepped out through the gates of my once-beloved home, Winterhead pack, a sense of desolation engulfed me. I was lost, not just in the physical sense, but also in my heart and mind. Without any idea of where to go, the world seemed vast and unfamiliar, and I felt utterly alone. The pain of losing my pack and the only family I had known cut deep. My cousins, whom I had considered friends, had betrayed me, turning their backs when my uncle seized the throne after my mother’s passing. The betrayal stung even more because it came from those I had loved and trusted. I walked aimlessly through the dense forest, hoping to stumble upon someone who could offer help or solace. But the woods offered no respite; the darkness intensified as nightfall descended, and the eerie silence amplified the uneasy sounds that surrounded me. Every snap of a twig or rustle of leaves sent shivers down my spine, making me feel as though someone or something was lurking in the shadows, watching my every move. “Okay Makayla, don’t get eaten,” I mused to myself as I try to take a deep breath. Despite the fear that gnawed at me, I tried to be brave, reminding myself that I had to keep going, no matter how uncertain or frightening the path ahead may be. I had to find a way to survive and find my place in this vast, unfamiliar world. My stomach growled painfully, a constant reminder of the punishment my uncle had inflicted upon me before I left. Locked in my room without food or water the whole day, his cruelty had left me dehydrated and hungry. But I had to keep moving forward, driven by the determination to break free from the chains of oppression and find my own strength. As the moon rose higher in the night sky, its pale light cast eerie shadows on the forest floor, and I felt the biting cold of winter seep into my bones. Each step became more laborious, and fatigue threatened to overwhelm me. The hunger gnawed at me relentlessly, and the pangs in my stomach became almost unbearable. I could feel my strength waning with every passing moment, and I knew I had to find sustenance soon, or else I might not make it through the night. The dizziness washed over me in waves, and I struggled to keep my eyes open. I knew I had to stay conscious, to keep moving, but my body was betraying me. Each step felt like an insurmountable challenge, and I stumbled several times, barely managing to regain my balance. I refused to give in to the darkness. I clung to the last threads of consciousness, determined to survive this ordeal. I knew I had to find food and water, even if it meant resorting to foraging or finding a stream somewhere in the woods. With each passing minute, my vision blurred, and the world seemed to spin around me. The ground beneath my feet felt unsteady, and I knew I was at the brink of collapsing. But I couldn't let myself succumb to unconsciousness, not when my survival depended on staying awake. Despite my best efforts, my body could no longer bear the strain. With a final gasp, I collapsed to the forest floor, my senses fading into oblivion. The cold ground embraced me as I surrendered to the darkness, my body finally giving in to the exhaustion and hunger that had plagued me. As my eyes were about to close, I saw a flickering light, a torch perhaps, casting eerie shadows around me. Following the light, I heard the echo of footsteps drawing nearer. Suddenly, before my eyes could shut completely, I found myself surrounded by men, their faces obscured in darkness. Then, everything faded away as I succumbed to unconsciousness.
