Chapter 2

Makayla’s POV The minute I open my eyes, the memories of my uncle and his daughters driving me out of my home for a minor incident flood my mind, burdening me with their weight. Despite the dizziness, I muster the strength to get off the bed, only to realize I'm not in my own familiar surroundings. “What…” Panic sets in, and I gasp, desperately seeking a way out. Could I be held captive? It slowly dawns on me that I have fainted, and the people I saw before I passed out brought me with them. The fear of my situation intensifies as I remember that fainting could cost me my life. Now, I find myself in an unfamiliar place, clueless about how to escape. Weak from not eating, I attempt to get up, but my body gives in, and I collapse back onto the bed. I close my eyes, ready to accept whatever fate awaits me. However, my anticipation of death is interrupted by the creaking sound of the room's door opening. I gasp with fear creeping into my veins and closed my eyes. I lay there with my eyes shut tight, trying my best to feign slumber, the uncontrollable shaking of my body betrayed my facade. I heard a soft chuckle, and the sudden warmth of a hand against mine startled me. My curiosity got the better of me, and I cautiously opened one eye. To my surprise, I was met with the sight of a beautiful, smiling face. In that moment, I felt a glimmer of comfort, and the fear that had been gripping my heart started to ease. She assured me that I was safe, and though I didn't utter a word in response, I believed her. Sitting up straight, I waited for her to shed some light on the mystery of my surroundings. It was evident that she knew something about me – perhaps even more than I did myself. With her gentle demeanour, she spoke again, “You fainted because you were dehydrated and hungry. I’ll get you something to eat.” She left the room, and I watched her go, feeling a mix of apprehension and curiosity. Moments later, she returned with a plate of food and a cup of water. My weakness and hunger took control as I snatched the plate from her without hesitation. As I hungrily devoured the food, my mind raced with questions. Where was I? Who was this woman? Why did she seem to care for my well-being? Despite my uncertainty, her smile and the warmth of her gesture offered a glimmer of hope in this unknown place. After finishing my meal, I finally found my voice, and with a soft, hoarse tone, I asked her, "Can you tell me what's happening? Where am I?" Her smile persisted as she replied, "I promise to explain everything, but finish eating first. You're safe here." Her words, although cryptic, were oddly comforting. Swallowing the last morsel of food in my mouth, I set the plate aside, and I could feel her gaze fixed on it, curious about why I had left half of it uneaten. “Aren’t you hungry anymore?” She asked me with a puzzled look on her face. Trying to mask my true intentions. “I don’t have any space left. The food was delicious. I’m so full now, thank you.” The real reason was my burning desire to uncover the truth about my whereabouts and safety. She nods and proceeds to tell me what I needed to know. “My name is Anna, and I am one of Alpha Morse’s maids. And you’re currently in Cavemoor pack.” Cavemoor pack sounded familiar, but my memory failed me, leaving me unable to recall where I had heard the name before. I stared into the void, lost in thought, as Anna explained that she worked for Alpha Morse, and I was now in his pack. The revelation left me feeling uneasy, unsure of what to expect in this new territory. Without wasting any time, Anna informed me, “the pack members are concerned about a stranger like you being brought into their midst.” She also sounded worried to know who I am. The thought of their wariness made me anxious, even though I hadn't done anything to warrant suspicion. “Common, the Alpha had instructed me to feed you and present you to him,” Anna said and I hesitantly followed her out of the room I somewhat felt safe in. She led the way towards the palace of Alpha Morse. My heart raced with each step, not knowing what to anticipate or how the encounter would unfold. Despite my unease, I trusted Anna, sensing a hint of sincerity in her actions. As we walked through the pack's grounds, I observed the members going about their activities, exchanging glances that were a mix of curiosity and caution directed at me. I tried my best to appear composed, though my heart continued to beat rapidly with every passing moment. Finally, we arrived at the heart of the pack, where the grandeur of the Alpha's palace stood tall and imposing. Anna knocked on the sturdy wooden door, and a deep voice from within beckoned us to enter. As I stepped into the palace, we followed so many hallways until we enter a huge room with men holding titles in the room. No one had to tell me who Alpha Morse was. He was obviously the man sitting on the bigger chair and staring right at me. His commanding presence was undeniable, and a shiver ran down my spine. He scrutinized me for a moment before speaking, his tone authoritative yet tinged with curiosity. "So, you're the one they brought to our pack. What's your name, stranger?" he inquired, his sharp gaze piercing through me. Gathering my nerves, I replied, "My name is Makayla. I... I don't really know how I ended up here." I look at the people that were judging me with their look and making me more uncomfortable. Alpha Morse's expression softened slightly, sensing my uncertainty. He explained, "We can't take any chances with outsiders, but Anna here vouches for you. However, we need to know who you are and why you're here." As I knelt before Alpha Morse, my heart pounded in my chest as I mustered the courage to reveal my past. "Alpha Morse," I began, my voice trembling slightly, "I am from the Winterhead pack, but I was chased out by my uncle, who is the Alpha because I refuse to take the mate he chose for me. And the moon Goddess had told me my mate is yet to come." As Alpha Morse looked at me closely, I couldn't help but lower my gaze, feeling a mix of feebleness and hopelessness. The whispers of the two individuals seated on either side of him filled the room as they protested against taking me in. But Alpha Morse silenced them with a stern order, and the room fell into an uneasy silence. Gathering my strength, I continued, "I am homeless now, Alpha, and I ask for your consideration and help." The room seemed to hold its breath as we waited for Alpha Morse's response. He remained quiet for a moment, contemplating my words, before finally deciding, "Anna, take her to prince Calvin’s chamber. Let her serve as one of his maids there." Anna, with a nod, followed Alpha Morse's instructions and escorted me to the prince’s chamber. As we walked, she warned me about Prince Calvin's temperament, advising me never to cross his line as he could be quite feisty and arrogant. “Don’t look him in the eye. Don’t stand while he’s standing. Don’t talk unless he’s given you permission to.” Inwardly, I appreciated her guidance, but all I cared about was the fact that I was no longer homeless. I was grateful for Alpha Morse's compassion and willingness to offer me a chance at a new life, even if it meant facing challenges in the prince’s service. As Anna led me through the palace corridors towards the prince’s chamber, I couldn't help but feel a mix of nervousness and curiosity. My heart was still racing from the encounter with Alpha Morse, and now, I was about to meet the infamous Prince Calvin. As we approached his chamber, the door swung open, and there he stood, the most handsome man I had ever seen. His wet hair glistened under the light, and droplets of water trickled down his well-defined chest. It was evident that he had just returned from a swim. But my admiration quickly turned to discomfort as I caught the look of disgust in his eyes when he saw me. In response, I instinctively lowered my gaze and furrowed my brows. It seemed Anna wasn't exaggerating about Prince Calvin's arrogance and rudeness. Curiosity got the better of him, and he turned to Anna, demanding to know who I was. “What’s this? Who is she and why are you both here?” He asks with his deep and rich voice that made me shiver with fright. "She's one of your new maids, Your Highness," Anna replied with a respectful tone, keeping her composure despite the tense atmosphere. Prince Calvin stepped closer, his demeanour aggressive and intimidating. He roughly grabbed my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze. I tried my best not to show my anger and annoyance, but my face betrayed me, and he smirked in response. For a moment, I contemplated standing up to his rude behaviour, but I knew better than to risk causing trouble on my first day. Instead, I suppressed my emotions and simply nodded, acknowledging my new role as his maid. In that moment, I made a silent promise to myself that I wouldn't let Prince Calvin's arrogance break my spirit. I may be new here, but I wasn't going to let anyone treat me with disrespect. As I continued to look into his eyes, I held my ground, determined to prove myself and show him that I was not just another maid to be belittled.
