Chapter 4

Makayla’s POV As I stood before Prince Calvin, he forced me to get on my feet. “Repeat what you just said to me,” he demanded, his voice came out cracked and loud. My heart raced with each passing moment, sensing the intensity of the situation. He pushed me against the wall, his face uncomfortably close to my neck, making it difficult for me to breathe. His heavy breaths and growls only added to the tension in the room. I tried to steady myself, fearing what punishment he might inflict upon me. With trepidation, I knelt down, bracing for whatever was to come, but to my surprise, instead of physical punishment, he unleashed his anger through words. “Get out. Get out of my sight,” He yelled with an intense and angry tone, making it clear he wanted me to leave his presence immediately. Feeling a mix of relief and confusion, I quickly made my way out of the room, trying to catch my breath and process the encounter with him. It was a moment that left me shaken, but I knew I had to gather myself and continue to navigate the complexities of life in this pack. Anna. She is the person I had first met and the first to tell me about prince Calvin. Though she wasn’t one of his slaves, she knows much more about him than any maid in the palace. Breathless from the hurried sprint through the palace, I reached Anna's room only to find it empty. Panic rising, I asked her roommate, “Where is she? Where’s Anna?” I was panting like a dog. With a concerned expression, she answers me. “Anna is at Stel market. Are you alright?” I thank her, disregarding her concern and made my way out of the castle. Although I had never been to the market before, I knew there was only one market in the pack. Without wasting any time, I rushed towards the market, my mind filled with worry about Prince Calvin's recent outburst and the need for Anna's comforting presence. As I arrived, the market's bustling atmosphere engulfed me, and I started searching for Anna amidst the colourful stalls and lively crowd. Minutes felt like hours as I scoured each section, calling out her name in a hushed voice, hoping to catch a glimpse of her familiar face. My heart sank as I couldn't find her anywhere. The anxiety gnawed at me, and I felt lost without her guidance. Just when I was about to give up, my eyes caught a glimpse of her distinctive dress among the vibrant bouquet aisle. “Anna,” I murmured. Relief washed over me, and I hurried towards her, feeling grateful for the sight of her. She turned around, her eyes widening in surprise and concern as she saw the distress etched on my face. I rushed into her comforting embrace, seeking solace in her presence. “You were not joking about Prince Calvin, Anna. I shall start counting my days in this pack.” I further tell her what had happened, not even caring about our surrounding. Anna listened attentively as I poured out the details of what had transpired with Prince Calvin, feeling a mix of fear and frustration. “Oh Makayla,” she begins, grabbing my hand as we leave the flower store. “I have warned you about crossing Calvin’s line. He’s difficult to be around let alone crossing his boundaries. The last thing you want to do is disobey him, Makayla. Stop acting brave and thinking you’d win. He is royalty, you are not—you have to remember that. You are under him and you must obey him at all cost.” Despite my stubborn nature, I nodded in acknowledgment, knowing deep down that she was right. Anna's concern was genuine, and I appreciated her care for my well-being. Putting the tense moment behind us, I helped Anna with the shopping for the Luna that I was yet to meet, making sure to pick the best items she needed. It was comforting to be by Anna's side, and the distraction of the task helped alleviate some of the anxiety I felt about returning to the prince's chamber later. After finishing our shopping, we headed back to Anna's room and shared a meal together. As we ate, Anna reassured me that it would be more troublesome if I didn't return to the prince's chamber, as it would only add to the tension between us and might invite further scrutiny. “It is against the rule for a slave to sleep outside of their supposed room, Makayla. I wish we you could spend the night here but we would both get in trouble.” Anna looks at me worriedly. Though I understood her reasoning, I couldn't help feeling upset and anxious about going back to face Prince Calvin. The thought of another confrontation made my heart race with fear. But Anna's presence and her words of encouragement gave me a glimmer of courage to face the situation head-on. As the evening wore on, I finally decided to make my way back to the prince's chamber. Anna walked with me part of the way, offering her support until we reached a point where I had to continue alone. “Be good, Okay?” I nod at her and continued the journey to Prince Calvin’s chamber. I cautiously entered Prince Calvin's chamber, my heart still uneasy from our earlier encounter. I couldn't shake the memory of his anger, but I was puzzled as to why he hadn't punished me. I had tried to be brave when I spoke those words to him, but it only resulted in him chasing me out of his room. As I made my way towards my room, I took a turn that I thought would lead me to the maid's chamber. To my surprise, there stood Prince Calvin, looking as regal and imposing as ever. His eyes met mine, and I felt a mixture of fear and curiosity. "Your Highness," I stammered, unsure of what to say. "I didn't mean to intrude. I was just trying to find my way back to my room." I don’t want to sound vulnerable but I was too petrified and pull out another mischief at the same day. He studied me for a moment, his expression unreadable. “Where have you been?” He says it in a demanding way. I dared to look up at him and angry expression distorted his face. My heart raced, and I nervously fiddled with the edge of my apron. Can I survive with prince Calvin’s burden and arrogance?
