Chapter 8

1533 Words
Business didn’t move the way Jessica had imagined. Not even close. At first, she told herself it was normal. New shop, new face, new environment, people needed time to trust her. She arranged her goods neatly every morning, swept the front of her shop, greeted passersby with a polite smile. They smiled back sometimes. But they didn’t stop. Days turned into a week. A week stretched into two. And still, nothing changed. The neighboring shops bustled with life—voices haggling, customers laughing, goods exchanging hands. But Jessica’s shop stood like a quiet pocket in the middle of noise, untouched, avoided. It didn’t make sense. She sold the same things. Her prices were even lower. Yet people would walk up, glance inside… and then move on as if something invisible pushed them away. At first, she blamed herself. Maybe her arrangement wasn’t attractive enough. Maybe she needed to advertise more. Maybe, But deep down, a colder thought had already begun to take root. What if it’s not about the business? The loneliness made everything worse. When the market closed each evening and she returned to her apartment, the silence felt heavier than it should. The walls, once comforting, now seemed too still, too aware. She would sit on her bed, staring at her phone, scrolling through nothing, waiting for a notification that never came. No family. No real friends. And Felix… Jessica swallowed hard. She hadn’t heard from him in days. Not even a message. The man who had once changed her life now felt like a distant shadow. And she hated how much that hurt. It was on one of those quiet evenings that she met Daniel. He appeared so naturally that it almost felt planned. Jessica had stayed late at her shop again, hoping, just hoping that maybe a last-minute customer would walk in. None did. She sighed, locking up and stepping out into the dimly lit street. “Rough day?” The voice came from behind her. Jessica turned. A young man leaned casually against a nearby pole, hands tucked into his pockets. He had an easy smile, the kind that didn’t look forced. “I’ve seen you around,” he added. “You’re new here.” Jessica hesitated. “Yes.” “Business slow?” She gave a small, tired laugh. “Is it that obvious?” Daniel shrugged. “Only to someone who pays attention.” Something about the way he said it made her pause. Not uncomfortable. Just… aware. “I’m Daniel,” he said, stepping forward slightly. “Jessica.” “Nice to meet you, Jessica.” And just like that, a conversation began. Daniel became a regular presence after that. At first, it was just small talk, quick greetings, and short chats in the evenings. Then longer conversations. Then… something more. He started walking her home. At first, Jessica resisted. “I can manage,” she insisted. “I know,” he replied with a soft smile. “But you don’t always have to.” It was such a simple statement. But it hit deeper than she expected. Because for so long, she had been managing. Alone. Soon, Daniel became the highlight of her days. He listened. Really listened. He asked about her past, not in a way that felt intrusive, but in a way that made her feel seen. “You’ve been through a lot,” he said one night as they sat outside her apartment. Jessica looked away. “More than I wanted.” “And yet you’re still here,” he replied. She glanced at him. “And still fighting.” Her chest tightened slightly. No one had ever said it like that before. Then came the late-night calls. They would talk for hours about dreams, fears, plans. Daniel spoke of the future like it was something solid, something they could build together. “I don’t want to struggle forever,” he said once. “I want something real, stable, and a home.” Jessica felt her heart soften. “I want that too,” she admitted. He looked at her then, his gaze steady. “We could have that.” Her breath caught. “Together.” The shift was subtle. Almost invisible. But it changed everything. Daniel started taking her out. Nothing extravagant at first, just small dinners, roadside food spots, quiet places where they could talk. But to Jessica, it felt like luxury. It felt like being cared for. He would hold her hand when they walked. Call her just to hear her voice. Check on her during the day. “How’s the shop?” he’d ask. She’d sigh. “Still slow.” “It’ll pick up,” he assured her. “I believe in you.” And she wanted, needed,to believe him. Then one evening, as they sat across from each other at a small restaurant, Daniel leaned forward. “I’ve been thinking,” he said. Jessica smiled slightly. “That sounds serious.” “It is.” Her heart skipped. “What is it?” He hesitated for just a moment, just enough to make it feel real. “I want to marry you.” The words hung in the air. Jessica blinked. “What?” “I’m serious,” he continued. “I’ve never felt this way about anyone before.” Her pulse quickened. “Daniel…” “I know it sounds fast,” he said, reaching for her hand. “But when you know, you know.” Jessica’s thoughts spun. Marriage? Already? It was sudden. Too sudden. And yet… The loneliness. The silence. The empty shop. The fear that she was slipping again… All of it pressed against her judgment. “You wouldn’t regret it,” Daniel added softly. “I’d take care of you. We’d build something together.” Something steady. Something certain. Something she desperately needed. “Yes,” she whispered. From that moment, everything moved faster. Daniel became more involved in her life, visiting her shop, helping her arrange goods, offering suggestions. “You need to think bigger,” he said one afternoon. Jessica frowned. “With what ?” He leaned closer. “That’s the thing.” Her stomach tightened slightly. “What do you mean?” “I have a plan,” he said. The plan sounded perfect. Too perfect. “I’ve been working on something,” Daniel explained. “An investment opportunity. It’s small now, but it could grow fast.” Jessica listened carefully. “If we put in enough capital, we could multiply it,” he continued. “Then we won’t have to struggle like this.” Her mind immediately went to one thing. The money. The money Felix had sent her. The money she had used a few of it for her business. “What kind of investment?” she asked cautiously. Daniel smiled. “Something secure.” That word again. Secure. It felt comforting. “I trust you,” Jessica said slowly. And that was the moment everything shifted. She gave him the money. All of it. Every last amount Felix had sent. As she handed it over, Daniel held her hands gently. “You won’t regret this,” he said. She nodded. “I know.” But deep inside, something twisted. A small voice. A warning. She ignored it. For a while, things seemed fine. Daniel didn’t disappear. He still called. Still visited. Still took her out. If anything, he seemed even more attentive. “Just a little time,” he kept saying. “The investment needs time.” Jessica believed him. Because she had to. Because if she didn’t… Then what had she done? But then… Things started to change. Subtly at first. Daniel missed a call. Then another. Then a whole day passed without hearing from him. Jessica told herself he was busy. Investments took time. Right? But the silence grew heavier. And deeper. Until it felt familiar. Too familiar. One evening, Jessica sat in her shop, staring at her phone. No messages. No calls. Nothing. The market around her buzzed as usual, but she felt completely disconnected from it. Like she was watching life happen… without her. Her chest tightened. “Not again,” she whispered. That night, she couldn’t take it anymore. She called him. Once. Twice. Five times. No answer. Her hands began to shake. Something was wrong. Something was very wrong. The next morning, she went looking for him. She checked the places they used to go. The restaurant. The roadside stall. Nothing. No one had seen him. It was like he had vanished. Just like that. Jessica’s heart pounded as a terrible realization began to form. “No…” She shook her head. “No, no, no…” But the truth didn’t care about her denial. She had seen this before. Felt this before. Trust. Hope. And then, Nothing. Her legs felt weak as she made her way back to her shop. Everything felt different now. Darker. Heavier. Like the world had shifted slightly off balance. “And now…” She swallowed hard, her heart pounding louder than ever. Then Daniel wasn’t the beginning of her downfall. He was just the next step. Outside, the market buzzed like nothing had changed. But inside Jessica’s world, Everything had already begun to collapse.
