Asoru told all his friends that Adaku was a witch without revealing why he thought so. His friends spread the rumour around the class. The three students, who bathed themselves with faeces, believed the rumour and helped to spread it the more. Everybody in the class believed in the story except her circle of friends and Emeka.
Emeka was one of the boys in Adaku’s class, who had never spoken to her before. It is uncertain why he debunked the witch-story but it might be because he secretly admired Adaku. He had been seeking for an opportunity to talk to her and to tell her how he felt about her. It is obvious to him that he lusts after her.
