Chapter 2 – Sparks and Suspicions Maya sat at her favorite café after work, a quiet little corner with soft lights and a faint aroma of roasted coffee beans. She absentmindedly tapped her fingers on the table, replaying the earlier encounter with Eli. His presence lingered like a melody she couldn’t forget, sharp yet oddly comforting. Across the city, the glow of neon signs reflected off glass walls, and yet it all felt muted compared to the electric tension she felt around him. She wasn’t supposed to think about him. Clients came and went, emotions were calibrated and delivered, and her heart stayed untouched. But Eli… he didn’t fit into any of those neat categories. Her phone buzzed. A message from Lena, her friend and coworker: “So… mysterious new client. Cute? Dangerous? Or both? Spill.” Maya rolled her eyes but couldn’t help the small smile. “We’ll see. Just business.” Even as she typed the reply, a nagging feeling crawled under her skin. Something about Eli wasn’t just curiosity or flirtation. It was… deliberate. He seemed to study people the way someone studies art, observing every micro-expression, every subtle reaction. And when he looked at her, it was like he could see straight through her—through all the carefully constructed walls she’d built around her heart. The next day at Emotix Labs, Eli returned. Maya froze for a fraction of a second, heart thudding in her chest. He smiled that same enigmatic smile, hands casually tucked into his pockets. “Back so soon?” she asked, striving for casual neutrality. “I didn’t get enough last time,” he said lightly. “I think we need… a proper session.” Maya led him to the booth again, trying to keep her emotions in check. But his presence made it harder than usual. Every time he spoke, every glance he threw her way, something inside her stirred. She had trained herself to remain detached, but with Eli, it felt impossible. As she began calibrating the system, she noticed subtle fluctuations in the readings. He wasn’t entirely honest about his emotions. A part of him was authentic, she could feel it, but there were artificial spikes—tiny, controlled bursts. Her professional instincts kicked in: he was renting emotions, but he wasn’t hiding it well. “You’re very… precise,” he said, watching her movements, his voice casual but measured. “You always get it right?” Maya kept her eyes on the interface, hiding the flicker of suspicion. “I make it my business to. It’s not hard if you know what you’re doing.” Eli tilted his head, curious. “And what about feelings you can’t control? Have you ever felt… genuine anger, sadness, or love without filters?” The question hit harder than she expected. Genuine love. She had thought about it before, but she’d always convinced herself that love was too unpredictable, too dangerous, too… inconvenient. She gave a faint shrug, not trusting herself to answer honestly. Eli leaned closer, lowering his voice. “Maybe that’s what makes it worth having.” Maya’s breath caught. He wasn’t saying it for the booth or the rented emotions. He was saying it for her. And she couldn’t tell if she wanted to resist—or lean in. For the first time, the boundary between professional and personal blurred. She realized she wanted to know him beyond the calibration booth, beyond the rented smiles and temporary courage. She wanted to see the real Eli. But she also knew the risk. In a city where emotions could be borrowed or faked, how could she trust him—or herself? When the session ended, Eli stood and offered a small bow of gratitude. “Thank you, Maya. I… enjoyed this.” Maya nodded, her mind spinning. “Yeah. Me too.” Outside, he paused by the door, glancing back with that same magnetic intensity. Then he disappeared into the neon-lit streets, leaving Maya alone with her racing thoughts. She sipped her coffee, staring out the window at the city that never truly slept. For the first time in years, she realized that she didn’t want to control everything. She wanted to risk something real. And Eli… Eli was the first person who had made her want that.
