Chapter 5 – Shadows of Doubt
Maya returned to Emotix Labs the next morning with a strange mix of excitement and unease. The memory of last night lingered—the warmth of Eli’s hand, the playful teasing, the moments when she had genuinely laughed. For the first time in years, she felt the possibility of real connection.
And yet, a shadow hovered at the edge of her thoughts.
Eli was unpredictable. Charming, yes, but unpredictable. Her professional instincts pricked at her, warning that behind his vulnerability might be carefully orchestrated façades. After all, he had already borrowed emotions before—why should tonight be any different?
Her first session of the day began, and she immersed herself in the rhythmic hum of calibrators, trying to push thoughts of Eli aside. That’s when a notification flashed on her screen: Emotion Rental Alert – Eli.
Her heart skipped. She clicked it, scanning the data. Subtle anomalies jumped out immediately: spikes in happiness and calm at times that didn’t match his baseline. There were traces of borrowed emotions, cleverly hidden, but not invisible to her trained eyes.
She frowned. “So much for last night being… real.”
Her mind raced. Should she confront him? Should she ignore it? The professional part of her wanted to remain detached, but the personal part… the part that had felt sparks and warmth, refused to let it go.
By midday, Eli appeared at her booth again. Maya straightened, determined to remain professional, though her pulse betrayed her.
“Morning,” he said casually, giving her that signature half-smile that always seemed to make her heart stumble.
“Morning,” Maya replied, her voice firmer than she intended. “We need to talk.”
Eli’s brow lifted, curiosity glinting in his blue eyes. “About what?”
Maya gestured to the screen. “Your emotional readings. They’re… inconsistent. Some of the spikes don’t match your baseline. You’re borrowing emotions, aren’t you?”
He let out a slow breath, leaning back in his chair. “I suppose you could call it that.”
Maya’s chest tightened. “Why? Why lie or borrow feelings with me? I thought last night… I thought it was real.”
Eli leaned forward, meeting her gaze with sincerity. “It’s complicated. I didn’t want to lie to you, Maya. I just… I wanted to understand myself. You make me feel things I’ve never felt before. And I didn’t know how to handle it without… borrowing a little courage.”
Maya’s hands hovered over the controls, unsure whether to shut down the system or reach across the booth and grab him. He sounded sincere, but part of her wanted to protect herself from disappointment.
“Do you even know what’s real anymore?” she asked quietly, almost to herself. “Or is everything just… rented?”
Eli’s eyes softened. “I’m learning. And I want what’s real… with you. But I can’t promise I won’t make mistakes.”
Maya felt the familiar pang of both hope and fear. She wanted to believe him, to let the warmth she felt last night fill the cracks in her carefully guarded heart. And yet…
Trust was a risk.
By the end of the session, they were quiet, the weight of unspoken words hanging between them. Eli gave her a small, tentative smile. “I’ll prove it, Maya. One way or another.”
She nodded, heart fluttering. Outside, the city pulsed and glimmered in neon, a reminder that in this world of borrowed emotions, the hardest feelings to navigate were always the ones you felt for yourself.
As Eli left the booth, Maya realized that the spark between them was no longer a simple curiosity. It was a wildfire, capable of warming her—and burning her—at the same time.
And for the first time, she wondered if she was ready to risk everything for something real.
