Chapter 7 – The First Complication Monday mornings at Emotix Labs were usually quiet—clients trickled in slowly, and the hum of calibrators filled the empty spaces. But today felt different. Maya sensed it immediately, the tension in the air like static before a storm. She was reviewing session logs when Lena appeared at her desk, eyes sparkling with mischief and a hint of warning. “You’re glowing,” Lena said, leaning casually against the divider. “Who’s the lucky… client?” Maya shot her a warning look. “It’s not like that.” Lena smirked knowingly. “Uh-huh. Right. Keep telling yourself that.” Before Maya could respond, a new client arrived. And not just any client—a well-known social influencer, glamorous and confident, with a knack for making people feel inadequate just by standing in a room. Maya recognized her immediately: Serena Kaye. She was known for borrowing emotions to amplify her charisma, ensuring everyone adored her online persona. “Ah, Maya,” Serena said, voice dripping with charm. “I hear you’re the best at… making people feel things.” Maya forced a polite smile. “Welcome. How can I help today?” Serena’s eyes flicked toward Eli, who had just walked in behind her, casual and calm as ever. Maya stiffened. She hadn’t expected him so early, and the way Serena looked at him—like a predator sizing up prey—set off alarms in her gut. “Is this… him?” Serena asked, her tone sweet but sharp. “The mysterious man from the lab?” Eli’s lips curved into that infuriating, effortless smile. “I’m afraid I’m not mysterious… just misunderstood,” he said lightly. Maya felt a flicker of jealousy she hadn’t anticipated. Serena’s energy was loud, overwhelming, and intentionally intoxicating. And Eli… Eli didn’t seem to notice it in the way she feared, but the tension it created was undeniable. During the session, Maya noticed subtle signs—Eli’s slight hesitations, small changes in his emotional readings, and a hint of uncertainty. Something Serena was doing was affecting him, even if he didn’t fully realize it. After Serena left, Eli turned to Maya, his expression a mixture of apology and amusement. “She’s… intense.” Maya crossed her arms. “Intense? She’s calculated. And you let her affect your emotions.” He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Maybe a little. But it’s not what you think. I didn’t let her—” “You didn’t let her what?” Maya interrupted sharply, her chest tightening. “Affect you? Or pretend to feel something for her? Because I’m not sure I want to find out the difference.” Eli’s eyes softened. “Maya… it’s complicated. You have to trust me.” “Trust is earned,” she said firmly. “Not assumed.” The tension lingered as he nodded. “Understood.” As Eli walked away, Maya felt a storm of emotions she couldn’t ignore: attraction, fear, jealousy, and desire all tangled together. She realized for the first time that her feelings weren’t just sparks—they were flames, and someone was trying to blow wind on them. Back at her desk, Lena leaned closer. “Careful, Maya. That’s your first complication. And I have a feeling… it won’t be the last.” Maya stared at her screen, mind buzzing. Eli was charming, vulnerable, and intoxicating. But in a world where emotions could be borrowed, could she trust anything he felt—or anything she felt for him? And more importantly, she wondered if she even wanted to wait to find out.
