Chapter 10 – Misunderstandings and Heartbeats
The city’s early evening glow filtered through the lab’s glass walls, casting a soft amber light across Maya’s workstation. She was reviewing client logs, trying to focus, but the events of the past week had her heart in constant turmoil. Eli. Serena. Their rooftop café meeting. Every interaction replayed in her mind like fragments of a dream she couldn’t fully grasp.
Her communicator beeped, and she jumped slightly. A notification: Eli – wants to meet now.
Maya frowned. She had hoped for a calm evening at home, a chance to sort through her emotions, but curiosity—and perhaps a deeper longing—pulled her toward the lab’s exit.
When she arrived at the designated meeting spot—a quiet rooftop terrace bathed in neon city light—she saw Eli already there, leaning against the railing, hands in his pockets, gazing out at the skyline.
“Hey,” she said softly, approaching.
“Hey,” he replied, turning to face her with a faint smile. But the warmth she expected was tempered with something unreadable—a flicker of tension in his eyes.
Before she could speak, his communicator buzzed. He glanced at it briefly, then sighed. “I… have to take this. Important client issue.”
Maya nodded, trying not to let her disappointment show. She had hoped for an evening to connect, to test the fragile trust growing between them. Instead, she felt the first pang of misunderstanding creeping in.
The problem escalated when she saw his social feed later that night: a photo of Eli laughing and leaning close to Serena Kaye at some charity event, the two of them smiling like old friends. Maya’s chest tightened painfully.
Her mind spun. Did he… prefer her company? Or was she just another client, another person caught in his borrowed emotions? The wall she had been carefully dismantling in his presence now threatened to rebuild itself around her heart.
The next morning, Maya arrived at the lab with a heaviness she couldn’t shake. She avoided Eli at first, throwing herself into her calibrations and client sessions, but every glance at him made her stomach twist.
Finally, Eli approached, tentative. “Maya… can we talk?”
She crossed her arms, maintaining her professional demeanor. “About what? Should I congratulate you on last night’s photo with Serena?”
His blue eyes widened slightly, a mixture of surprise and regret. “That… wasn’t what it looked like. She cornered me at the event; it was strictly professional. I wasn’t… I’m not… I—”
Maya’s chest tightened further. “Eli, I don’t know what’s real anymore. Are you serious with me, or am I just… borrowing feelings too?”
He reached for her hand, but she stepped back, conflicted. “I need… proof. I can’t risk trusting something that might be fake.”
Eli’s voice softened, almost breaking. “Maya, you’re not another client. You’re not a test. I’ve been honest with you from the start, even when I struggled with my own emotions. I’m real with you.”
Her eyes filled with a mixture of frustration and longing. She wanted to believe him, but the lingering image of that photo, and the possibility of Serena’s influence, made her heart ache with doubt.
“I want to believe you,” she whispered. “I really do. But how can I know it’s real?”
Eli’s hand hovered near hers, hesitant, yet full of sincerity. “Because I’m not hiding behind rented emotions anymore. Everything I feel around you… it’s genuine. Let me prove it.”
Maya’s pulse raced. She wanted to trust him, wanted to let the walls fall completely, but the fear of heartbreak—a heartbreak built on borrowed emotions—kept her hesitant.
And yet, as they stood together on the rooftop, the city lights shimmering below, she realized that even in doubt, her heart refused to stay controlled. Something between them was undeniable, and it was only a matter of time before they would have to confront their feelings, fully and without pretense.
