BRENT’S POV
I can’t believe it has been a week, and here I am still the same way I have been for the past century and more. Mateless.
I have searched every nook and cranny of this city, and it just seemed like she disappeared into thin air. I hate that I have been to Club LUNA more times than I can count in hopes of catching a whiff of her scent.
The day after I met Dave, we went to the club together and combed through the entire area, the surroundings, everything. Until someone suggested we check the CCTV. That was when I saw her dancing with a shifter after coming out of the bathroom. They looked so cozy; it made me growl so loudly that every wolf in the room had to cower. It took Dave taking me out of the room before I shifted completely to get some form of normalcy.
My wolf was ready to rip the male who dared put his hands on our wolf to death for touching what was his. The said male, however, also disappeared into thin air, although someone confirmed that he was a member of the Blackstream pack, which is why I am here, the last place on earth I want to be.
For a little context, it's not that I have ever locked horns with Alpha Sean, but as an older alpha who has been ruling for about 200 years without a contender, it was either he was so good, meaning everyone loved him so much, which I didn’t think was possible, or so bad that he killed off contenders or perhaps nobody wanted to go against him because they were so afraid of him.
I definitely didn’t want to find out. Call it snooping maybe, but I needed to get onto his pack lands and I already had an excuse in mind in case I was caught. I had some matters to discuss with Alpha Sean about the hunter that had been disturbing both our packs as they were neighboring packs. What made it worse was the fact that we were only separated by a piece of land designated as no man's land where humans, witches, and other species roamed freely.
“Alpha Sean,” I stuck my hand out as I strolled into his office. A tall, well-built elderly man stood up to receive my hand and grasped it in a firm handshake.
“Alpha King Brent. What a delight to have you visit us. We do hope there is not too much of an issue—” he gestured toward the seat in front of his table. I gracefully accepted with a nod before he continued, “—seeing as you have refused that we have the conversation over the phone.”
I smiled subtly before responding, “Seeing as we are neighboring towns, I came to discuss the little hunter problem we have been having over the last couple of months. Though he is yet to get any of our people, I do not want to wait until he does.” What my wolf actually wanted to say was, “Bring out my mate now!!”
I kept the smile on my face as I listened to him talk about the fact that the hunter has taken down some of their members but he is close to catching him. I interjected where necessary and found myself growing irritable after a while. I soon got up after our talk reached a point of mutual agreement that we would create a joint task force and we would lend help to the other if the hunter was sighted. I was to send him the details of members who would be in said task force and he would do likewise.
I stood up sharply, adjusting my shirt. “Alpha Sean, I have to take my leave now. I would like to get to Montrill through your pack if that is okay with you, of course.” I found out through reconnaissance that the longest route to Montrill goes through the pack. I hope that I can catch a whiff of my mate as I drive through town even though I am not too optimistic.
Alpha Sean granted me permission to pass through the Blackstream pack territory, which means that anyone who sees me cannot accost me for passing through the land; although they wouldn’t stop me regardless as Alpha King, it also however meant I could explore a bit before leaving to Montrill with excuses of making detours. My wolf was restless, pacing in my mind as I thanked him and we drove through the dense forest that marked the border of the pack house Alpha Sean resided.
I ended up driving for hours with my windows down, not once did I catch a whiff of the honeysuckle and vanilla scent I am starting to forget. I refused to let her scent get out of my head.
The sign "Welcome to Montrill" greeted me cheerfully. A small sign written in ancient witches language was written under saying ‘you are now entering no man's land’. I felt a sense of calm and what I can liken to peace wash over me. I do not understand it, but I feel tension leave my body as I realize this is the closest place I have to home; it is where my mother’s half-sister, Amelia Johnson, one of the best witches I know resides. She has been a mother figure in my life, and I decided to use this excuse to pay her a surprise visit.
I parked my car near the town square and stepped out, stretching my legs. My wolf was on high alert, his senses sharp as I started walking down the cobblestone streets; still hyper-aware of the fact that we are yet to smell her.
I turned down the familiar road to the hospital where my Aunt worked and smiled with nostalgia when the familiar building came into view.
I walked through the doors and approached the reception desk. A young woman greeted me with a warm smile. I saw one or two shifters pass by with a look of recognition on their faces; I might be a secluded alpha king, but I was still well known.
“Good afternoon. How can I help you?” she asked.
“I’m here to see Aunt Amelia. Is she available?” I inquired. She looked at me, lost.
“Amelia Johnson, a nurse, she works here?”
“Oh, you mean Mrs. Johnson! She’s here. Who may I tell her is calling?”
“It is supposed to be a surprise visit, so I am hoping you could keep the tiny fact that I am her nephew hidden.” She smiled at me conspiratorially.
“Mum is the word. Let me just check to see if she is in her office,” she replied, picking up the phone and dialing a number. After a brief conversation, she nodded and gestured down the hallway.
“The last door on the left, opposite the—”
“—the consultants' lounge” I finished off for her, and she smiled at me. I guess the distrust has finally been worn down.
I strolled down the familiar hallway and peeped into the designated office to see my aunt sitting behind a desk. She looked just like my mother, a wave of nostalgia and warmth washed over me.
"Aunt Amelia," I greeted, stepping into the room. Her eyes widened in surprise, and a smile broke across her face.
“Brent! What a pleasant surprise!” she exclaimed, getting up to give me a hug.She asks what I am looking for and I quickly explain my situation too her.
“Well, I haven’t heard of any new wolves in town recently,” she said as she sat back, “but we do have a few shifters who visit the clinic. Maybe someone here has seen her.”
Just as I was about to respond, the door to the office opened, and a young woman walked in. She had long hair and striking eyes that immediately drew my attention. The moment our eyes met, time seemed to stand still. My wolf surged forward, recognizing her instantly; the honeysuckle and vanilla scent hit me hard, and I let out a growl.
My aunt turned to look at me with surprise in her eyes, asking me the question she couldn't spit out.
"Mrs. Johnson, I wanted to ask—" the young woman started but stopped abruptly, her eyes widening as she looked at me.
My heart pounded in my chest as I stood up, unable to tear my gaze away from her. She took a hesitant step forward, her expression a mix of surprise and recognition.
"Emily," Aunt Amelia said softly, noticing the intense connection between us. "This is Alpha King Brent."
Emily looked at me, her eyes filled with the same wonder and disbelief I felt. My wolf howled in joy, and I took a step closer to her, feeling an overwhelming sense of relief and happiness.
"Mate," I whispered, the word hanging in the air between us.
