I used silence as a tool to get clients to open up and speak. Silence made people nervous. They searched for something to say regardless of how stupid it sounded. In this case, Sasha said nothing. Instead, a weird laugh shattered the barrier that lay between us. Caught off guard, I asked, “What’s so funny?” “I remembered something amusing.” I’ve listened to her stories for three years, intent on helping her with her issues. She still doesn’t get it.
