WHISPER
MoonlitInk (7:08 A.M.)
You're awake early.
Orion (7:09 A.M.)
Couldn't sleep.
MoonlitInk
Bad dream?
Orion
Just thinking.
MoonlitInk
You think too much.
Orion
Bold of you to assume you're any different.
MoonlitInk
...Okay, that's fair.
Lena smiled before she could stop herself.
She slipped her phone into the pocket of her hoodie just as the bus pulled up to the university gates.
The morning air was cool, carrying the faint scent of wet grass from the night's rain.
Westbridge was just beginning to wake.
Students crossed the courtyard in small groups, some balancing coffee trays while others hurried toward early lectures with headphones on and backpacks half-zipped.
Lena stepped onto the familiar brick pathway.
For reasons she couldn't explain...
Her eyes drifted toward the engineering building.
Nothing.
She frowned slightly.
Why did I look over there?
She shook the thought away.
Probably because she'd walked this route enough times to notice everything around her.
That had to be it.
"...Lena!"
Maya jogged over, slightly out of breath.
"I swear one day I'm going to set three alarms."
"You already do."
"I know."
"They just don't work."
"They judge me."
Lena laughed.
"I don't think alarms can judge people."
"They can if they're loud enough."
The two friends walked side by side toward their first lecture.
Halfway there, Maya stopped.
"Oh!"
"What?"
"I forgot my notebook in the dorm."
"You forgot your notebook..."
"...On the day of a quiz."
"...Don't make me say it out loud."
Lena smiled.
"I'll save you a seat."
"You are officially my favorite person."
"I thought I already was."
"You were."
Maya pointed dramatically.
"Now you're promoted."
Shaking her head, Lena continued toward the Psychology building alone.
At the exact same time...
Ethan walked across the opposite side of campus.
Earbuds rested around his neck, though no music was playing.
He liked the quiet.
It helped him think.
He passed the university fountain.
The library.
The student center.
His pace never changed.
Then...
He noticed someone sitting alone on one of the benches outside the administration building.
A freshman.
Head lowered.
Trying very hard not to cry.
Ethan slowed.
He hesitated.
For a moment, it looked as though he might keep walking.
Instead...
He reached into his backpack.
Pulled out a small packet of tissues.
Set it gently on the bench beside the student.
No speech.
No questions.
No awkward sympathy.
Just a quiet,
"...You dropped these."
The freshman looked up, confused.
"I... they're not mine."
"I know."
A tiny pause.
"...Keep them."
Before the student could respond...
Ethan had already continued walking.
The tissues remained on the bench.
A minute later...
The freshman laughed through their tears.
Sometimes kindness didn't need an explanation.
A few buildings away...
Lena had seen everything.
She'd been waiting for Maya near the courtyard when the quiet interaction caught her attention.
She didn't hear what was said.
She only saw enough to understand one thing.
He's kinder than people think.
The thought surprised her.
She didn't know why it mattered.
It just...
Did.
Without realizing it...
She smiled.
And for the first time...
The mysterious, reserved engineering student no longer felt like a stranger.
The rest of the morning passed quietly.
Psychology quizzes.
Engineering lectures.
Students rushing from one building to another.
By lunchtime, the campus had settled into its usual rhythm.
Lena stood outside the library, balancing two books in one arm while trying to reply to Maya's messages.
Maya:
«Where are you?»
Lena:
«Library.»
Maya:
«Again?»
Lena:
«I have an assignment.»
Maya:
«Nerd.»
Lena smiled to herself and slipped her phone into her pocket.
The library doors opened.
Someone stepped out.
She wasn't paying attention.
Neither was he.
Thud.
The books slipped from her hands, scattering across the stone steps.
"Oh!"
Lena immediately crouched down.
"I'm so sorry—"
She stopped.
"...You."
Ethan looked equally surprised.
"...Hi."
For a second...
Neither of them moved.
Then they both reached for the same book.
Their fingers brushed.
They froze.
Lena quickly pulled her hand back.
"Sorry."
"You don't have to apologize every time we meet."
The words came so unexpectedly that she blinked.
"...Do I apologize that much?"
A tiny smile tugged at the corner of Ethan's lips.
"A little."
She covered her face with one hand.
"That's... embarrassing."
Without another word, Ethan gathered the remaining books and stacked them neatly.
"You dropped a bookmark."
Lena looked down.
A pressed lavender flower had fallen from between the pages of one of her novels.
"Oh!"
She carefully picked it up.
"Thank you."
Ethan glanced at it.
"You like flowers?"
She looked at the fragile lavender for a moment.
"My grandma used to press them inside books."
"I kept doing it after she passed away."
"It reminds me of her."
His expression softened.
"...That's nice."
There wasn't pity in his voice.
Only understanding.
It made Lena strangely comfortable.
"I'm Ethan."
She looked up.
"What?"
"My name."
For a second...
She simply stared.
Then she smiled.
"I'm Lena."
A small silence settled between them.
Not awkward.
Just... quiet.
"Lena!"
Maya's voice echoed from across the courtyard.
"There you are!"
She hurried over, stopping beside them.
"Oh..."
Her eyes moved between the two.
"I interrupted something, didn't I?"
"No!" Lena answered a little too quickly.
"We just met."
"For the third time," Maya corrected.
Ethan gave a polite nod.
"Hi."
"Hi."
Maya smiled knowingly.
"I'm Maya."
"Ethan."
Another brief silence.
Maya looked at the stack of books in Ethan's hands.
"You carrying those all the way to the library?"
"They're hers."
He handed them back to Lena.
"Thanks."
"No problem."
He adjusted the strap of his backpack.
"I should go."
"See you around," Maya said.
Ethan nodded once before walking away.
The girls watched him disappear into the crowd.
Maya waited exactly three seconds.
"...His name is Ethan."
"I know."
"And he knows yours."
"I know."
"And he smiled."
Lena frowned.
"Did he?"
Maya stared at her.
"Lena..."
"...That was practically a celebration."
Lena laughed.
"I think that's just his face."
"No."
Maya looped an arm through hers.
"I think someone just made progress."
"What progress?"
"I don't know yet."
"But I'm going to enjoy finding out."
Lena rolled her eyes, though she couldn't stop smiling.
As they walked away, neither of them noticed Ethan standing at the end of the path, waiting for a group of cyclists to pass.
He looked back once.
Just once.
Lena was laughing at something Maya had said.
Without realizing it...
He smiled again.
A little more this time.
