Sweet Dreams Are Made of This

838 Words
This time the dream was just too real. I stumble into the kitchen, hair a giant birds nest. Angeline is just turning off the stove and turns around to put an omelette on a plate that she sets in front of me. The heavenly smell is nothing compared to how it tastes. Eggs, extra sharp cheddar cheese, ham...all of the good things. Well, that and the hash browns. Potatoes are the perfect food. If you don't agree, you're wrong.  I must have had an odd look on my face because Angeline tilts her head and stares at me so hard I cannot help but notice.  "What? Ooo I av fumfig on ma fafe?" I ask with a mouthful of food. She rolls her eyes and looks at me while raising her eyebrow. I finish chewing and swallow. "What? Do I have something on my face?" I repeat. "You have that look on your face. Did you have another puppy dream?"  I sigh, "yes. But this time a squirrel was killed and a woman sunbathing was killed...well, I think she was. I was woken up before things got graphic." "Ser, that is, wow, that is an escalation. Are you ok?" She continues to eat, and inspects my face for reactions. "Lin, that wasn't all. In the dream, I was not a puppy at all. I was a wolf. I had gone to a stream and when I drank I saw a reflection. I thought I was seeing someone else, but I looked around, it was me. I was a wolf. So dream wolf me killed a squirrel and a woman. What they hell is going on? Why do I keep having these stupid dreams?" I huff and take my dish to the sink, rinse it, and then place it in the dishwasher.  Lin comes over and sits next to me, "Ser, do you know why you are having these dreams? Did you have an incident with dogs or wolves when you were younger? We have been friends for a long while, and I don't recall any issues with either. I mean, we have been to Wolf Haven a million times. You weren't scared were you? I feel horrible for dragging you there!" She covers her face with her hands. "Calm down weirdo. Wolf Haven is one of my favorite places. I also haven't ever had any issues with wolves or dogs in my life. Cats hate me for some reason, but I think they are little furry aliens anyway. I don't understand. Especially since the dreams are escalating. The squirrel was bad enough, but the woman? Why would a wolf attack a sunbathing woman? She wasn't showing any aggression or even moving. She was just lying there." I look at Lin, confusion and worry written on my face. "Look, I know that you want nothing but sweet dreams, but that isn't reality. I think you just need to do some meditation before bed and drink some sleepy tea. When we get home I will show you. I never have bad dreams." She gets up to deal with her dishes and then heads towards her bedroom. "If you don't get dressed, your gonna be late for work!" "It isn't even a real job! I am just helping get files scanned into the system so our police department can get into this century!" I shout, heading to my room to get dressed. I hear her muttering something, "don't be in there talking s**t Lin!" I say before running into my room and closing the door before Lin throws something at me.  Lin is practically my sister since we were born and raised together. Our parents had grown up together just outside of Friday Harbor. Lin and her parents moved to Long Beach for her dads job, and we would often visit them. It was during one of these trips that there was an accident. Our car lost control, flipping several times before landing in a field. I was thrown from the car because I had secretly taken my seat belt off to sleep in the backseat. I remember crying out for Lin, and then waking up in the hospital with Lin and her parents there. The devastated look on their faces told me everything I needed to know. That was 10 years ago. I was told that it happened so fast that they didn't suffer, which has always been something I am thankful for. I don't have any relatives, so Marc and Renee adopted me and helped repair the broken little girl I was. I had some pretty severe injuries that I went to physical therapy for. I also saw a therapist to help me deal with losing everything I had known. Marc and Renee became Dad and Mom pretty quickly. They did everything for me and I never wanted for anything. I was their daughter, not just the adopted one. "I'm leeeaaaaavvvviiiiiiinng!" Lin hollered. I grabbed my purse and phone and ran out the door so she wouldn't leave without me.  I'm her sister, but she would leave my ass behind in a heartbeat.
