Chapter 13: Rhe Ghost File

805 Words
Chapter Thirteen The Ghost File The service tunnel smelled of damp concrete and machine oil. Sophia kept one hand against the wall as she followed Anna through the darkness. Their footsteps echoed in the narrow passage, broken only by the distant hum of generators somewhere above. "How much farther?" Sophia whispered. "Three minutes," Anna replied without slowing. "If nobody has discovered the maintenance exit." "That's not very reassuring." "It wasn't meant to be." They reached an old steel door secured by a rusted wheel handle. Anna turned it with both hands until it groaned open. Cold night air rushed inside. They emerged into an alley behind the hotel. A black van sped past the entrance they had just escaped from. Neither woman spoke. They disappeared into the crowded streets before anyone noticed them. --- At dawn, the first edition of the European Herald appeared on newsstands. The front page carried one headline. FORMER PROSECUTOR LINKED TO INTERNATIONAL FRAUD NETWORK Sophia bought a copy from a roadside kiosk. She scanned the article. Every accusation against Anna was supported by anonymous sources. No documents. No evidence. Only carefully crafted allegations. Anna read over her shoulder. "They're trying to destroy my credibility." Sophia folded the newspaper. "They're preparing the public to ignore anything you might reveal." --- In Lagos, Daniel arrived at the church before sunrise. The front gate stood open. He frowned. Pastor Elijah never left it unlocked. He stepped inside. Books lay scattered across the office floor. Cabinets had been emptied. Drawers pulled open. Nothing appeared stolen. Whoever entered had been searching. Pastor Elijah arrived moments later. He looked around quietly. "They knew exactly where to look." Daniel picked up a family photograph that had fallen behind a cabinet. "What were they after?" The pastor answered honestly. "I don't know." "But whatever it was..." "...they didn't find it." --- Thousands of miles away, Adrian Voss entered a secure archive beneath his company's headquarters. Only three people in the organisation possessed access. Rows of fireproof cabinets stretched into the distance. His chief legal adviser waited beside one shelf. "You asked for the original acquisition files." "I did." The adviser hesitated. "They're missing." Adrian stared at the empty space. "Missing?" "They were here last month." "Who accessed this room?" The adviser swallowed. "The records have been erased." "Not deleted." "Erased." Adrian looked around the silent archive. Someone inside his own company had been rewriting history. --- Anna unlocked a storage locker beneath Warsaw Central Station. Inside sat an old desktop computer coated in dust. Sophia looked confused. "This?" Anna smiled. "People protect expensive technology." "They ignore obsolete technology." She pressed the power button. After several minutes the computer finally started. A blue screen appeared. One folder sat alone on the desktop. GHOST Sophia clicked it. Thousands of names filled the screen. Journalists. Judges. Investigators. Accountants. Engineers. Clergy. Teachers. Each name carried a coloured symbol. "What am I looking at?" Anna's expression hardened. "People who refused to cooperate." Sophia continued scrolling. Some names were marked Retired. Others Discredited. Several simply read... Inactive. "What does 'Inactive' mean?" Anna didn't answer immediately. Finally she said, "It means nobody has heard from them again." --- Pastor Elijah invited Commissioner David Okafor to the church that evening. No uniforms. No bodyguards. Just two old friends sitting beneath a mango tree. David broke the silence. "I've served in law enforcement for twenty-eight years." "And?" "I used to think corruption was about criminals." Pastor Elijah waited. David sighed. "It's much worse." "It's about ordinary people convincing themselves that one compromise won't matter." The pastor smiled faintly. "I've heard that somewhere before." David looked surprised. "Then someone else has already discovered the same truth." --- Sophia copied the Ghost file onto three encrypted drives. She handed one to Anna. "What about the others?" "Insurance." "If anything happens to one of us..." "...the information survives." Anna nodded approvingly. "You're learning." Before Sophia could reply, the station lights flickered. Passengers looked up. An announcement echoed through the terminal. "Attention please..." The message stopped halfway through the sentence. Every digital display turned black. Then, one by one... Each screen displayed the same words in white letters. RETURN THE FILE. The crowd murmured in confusion. Within seconds the message disappeared. Normal schedules returned. People shrugged and continued walking. Most assumed it had been a technical fault. Sophia knew better. Someone had just demonstrated that they could reach almost any screen, anywhere, at any time. And they had done it with one purpose. To send her a message. She looked at Anna. "We're running out of places to hide." Anna picked up her coat. "Then we stop hiding." For the first time since Elias Mercer disappeared, the balance had begun to shift. Those pursuing the truth were no longer merely surviving. They were preparing to fight back. End of Chapter Thirteen
