Chapter 14

SELENE'S POV The warmth of Lucien's hand anchored me as the officiant's voice drifted into the background, a distant hum against the roaring silence in my own head. His thumb traced slow, deliberate circles on my skin, a silent rhythm that matched the sudden, terrifying calm settling over me. The officiant spoke of unions and journeys, of laws and binding contracts. I heard none of it. My world had narrowed to the man standing beside me. To the way his shoulder brushed mine, solid and real. To the way his golden eyes never, not for a single second, flickered away from my face. And then... It was time for the vows. Lucien turned to me. The air between us seemed to crackle, heavy and electric. He took both my hands in his, his grip firm, his skin warm against my trembling fingers. When he spoke, his voice wasn't just amplified by the microphone; it resonated in my bones, deep and unwavering. "Selene," he began, and my name on his lips sounded like a prayer. "I cannot promise you a life without storms. I cannot promise that the world will always be kind, or that the path ahead will be easy. Life is chaotic. It is cruel. It is unpredictable." A murmur of unease rippled through the crowd, but Lucien's gaze never wavered. His voice grew harder, sharper, yet filled with a terrifying tenderness. "But I promise you this: I will be the shield that stands between you and the darkness. I will be the wall that breaks the storm before it can touch you. I will protect you with my breath, with my blood, with my very soul. "I will respect you not just as my wife, but as the other half of my existence. I will spend every waking moment of this life and whatever comes after earning the privilege of standing beside you." His eyes burned into mine, intense and unbreakable. "Whether it takes days, months, or years... whether you are afraid, or angry, or lost... I will never stop choosing you. I will never stop fighting for us. You are my present, and my only future. I vow to you, Selene, that you will never, ever be alone again." The silence that followed was absolute. It was a vacuum, sucking out all the air, all the noise, leaving only the raw, vibrating truth of his words. I felt a tear slip down my cheek before I could even register the pain in my chest. It was too much. It was everything I had never dared to hope for. Lucien saw it. Of course he did. His expression fractured, a flash of pure agony crossing his face at my tears. He lifted his hand, his thumb brushing the wetness away with a touch so gentle it made my knees weak. "I'm sorry," he whispered, though only I could hear. "I'm here. I'm not going anywhere." The officiant cleared his throat, his voice shaking slightly. "And you, Miss Ashford?" Thousands of eyes pinned me to the spot. My throat felt like it was filled with glass. I tried to speak, but my voice was a ghost. What vows would I say? "I..." I swallowed, forcing air into my lungs. Lucien's hand squeezed mine, a lifeline in the drowning sea of my panic. "I can't promise that I won't be afraid." My voice was a whisper, but in the dead silence, it carried like a shout. "My life... it has changed so fast. Sometimes I feel like I'm dreaming. "Like I'm waiting to wake up and find that none of this is real." A nervous, broken laugh escaped me. "But..." I looked up into those golden eyes. "If you are willing to be patient with me... if you are willing to wait for me to catch up..." My voice steadied, fueled by the sheer force of his love. "I promise to try. I promise to be honest. I promise to trust you, even when my own mind fails me. "And I promise... to face whatever comes next with you." A smile broke across Lucien's face. It wasn't the smile of a man winning a prize. It was the smile of a man who had just been given the world. It was quiet, devastatingly sincere, and filled with a love so profound it made my head spin. The officiant nodded, visibly relieved. "If anyone present knows of any lawful reason why these two should not be joined in marriage... speak now, or forever hold your peace." The words hung in the air. The silence stretched, thick and heavy. One heartbeat. Two. Then... A voice shattered the peace. "I object!" The roar thundered through the venue, violent and angry. Gasps erupted like a wave. Heads turned in unison. My heart slammed against my ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. No. Slowly, dread pooling in my stomach, I turned. Kieran. He stood several rows back, his suit wrinkled, his face a mask of desperation and rage. His chest heaved as he shouted, "Selene, don't do this!" The world tilted. How? How was he here? How had he found this place? Before I could even process the impossibility of his presence, movement exploded around us. Men in black suits, security, Lucien's security, materialized from the shadows, surrounding Kieran in a flash. "Get off me!" Kieran screamed, shoving at them. "This is my fiancée! She doesn't want this!" The words hit me like a physical blow. Fiancée. The word felt foreign. Wrong. Coming from him now. "Selene!" he roared, struggling against the iron grip of the guards. "Tell them! Tell them you don't want this!" I opened my mouth, but no sound came out. I couldn't speak. I couldn't move. "You can't do this!" Kieran's voice cracked, desperate and pleading. "Selene!" They dragged him away. He fought. He screamed. He called my name until the sound was cut off by the slamming of the massive doors. Thud. Silence crashed back down, heavier than before. The guests whispered, shocked and confused. I stood frozen, my breath coming in short, panicked gasps. My heart was a drumbeat of terror. But then... Warmth. Lucien didn't let go. He didn't look at the doors. He didn't look at the scandalized crowd. He looked only at me. His golden eyes were filled with concern, with a fierce, protective intensity that anchored me to the earth. "I'm here," he whispered, his thumb stroking my hand again. "I'm right here. You're safe." The panic in my chest began to recede, replaced by the steady, unwavering presence of the man beside me. The officiant cleared his throat, his voice trembling. "If there are no further objections... by the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife." "You may kiss your bride." My breath hitched. I expected a perfunctory kiss. A gesture for the crowd. Instead, Lucien stepped closer. His hand rose, cupping my cheek with a tenderness that made my knees buckle. He tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear, his touch lingering. He searched my eyes, asking a silent question. Are you okay? I didn't pull away. I surprisingly leaned into his touch. He closed the distance. His lips met mine, soft and warm and patient. It wasn't a kiss for show. It wasn't for the cameras. It was a promise, sealed in silence and touch. It was a declaration that he would never let go, never let harm come to me, never let me face the darkness alone. Without thinking... Without fear... I kissed him back. The applause that erupted around us was deafening, a roar of celebration. But I heard none of it. The only sound in the world was the steady, strong beat of my own heart... And the man holding me.
