I overheard Gene muttering a disapproving "Oh no" when he heard Queenie was quitting.
Why was he shaking his head? Wasn't Queenie only in the club for Javier? If she left, it wouldn't be a big deal, would it?
Apparently, I was wrong. The members were all looking uneasy, even trying to convince Queenie to stay. Gene, too, joined in the pleading.
Curious, I walked over to see what was going on. Finally, I understood why. The school principal didn't like clubs dominated by one gender. A balanced male-to-female ratio was necessary if a club wanted to get funding.
