I often wondered when I should confess to my father that I genuinely loved chess. Would it be after college? After moving out? Or perhaps wait until he fully recovered from my mother's departure and found someone new?
Events unfolded unexpectedly. We stood near the principal's office right after I had been in a fight, and he asked me seriously about which club I was in.
I sensed he knew something, so when my first lie was exposed, I confessed without hesitation that it was the Chess Club.
In that moment, I envisioned the possible consequences: being sent home, forced to give up chess, made to quit the club...
But it didn't matter. I would resist. I was no longer the little boy who simply obeyed.
As expected, he slapped me.
