The journey back to Blood Moon Pack took most of the evening. Kael kept her wrapped in his coat against his chest.
She didn't speak. Every time his arm tightened protectively, she tensed. She watched unfamiliar trees blur past, waiting quietly for the moment when the kindness would reveal itself as a trick.
"What's your name, baby girl?" Kael asked, trying to get her to talk.
Elara stared at him for a moment, wondering why anyone would want to know her name.
"Elara," she finally said.
"Elara." Kael repeated it quietly. The name felt right in his mouth. "Elara, I need you to trust me. You are my mate. My soulmate. I will never hurt you. I will protect you."
She said nothing. Trust was a luxury she couldn't afford.
---
They finally crossed into Blood Moon territory. The car stopped in front of a mighty castle—larger and more welcoming than Blackfang's cold stone fortress.
The pack members were already waiting in the courtyard. Words had traveled ahead. Wolves lined the path to the castle in silent respect. Kael stepped out of the car with Elara still in his arms. He carried her straight through the great doors.
The contrast nearly broke her. It felt like home—but in an intimidating way. Warm light. Clean floors. The scent of woodsmoke and pine and safety.
Pack members bowed their heads as they passed. Not in mockery, but in acknowledgment of the future Luna.
Kael took her straight to the pack clinic and laid her down gently on the bed. The pack doctor, an older woman named Sera, stepped forward immediately.
Sera began to examine her injuries. Elara endured the gentle touches with the stillness of someone who had learned that struggling only made things worse.
Kael's eyes were on her the whole time—like he was ready to attack. His intensity made Sera nervous and uncomfortable, but she worked quickly and efficiently.
After the examination and check-up, Kael carried her to the Alpha suite. He ordered a bath to be drawn, soft clothes laid out, and food brought.
Elara stood in the middle of the large room, staring at the wide bed as if it were a trap. She didn't want any trouble. She didn't want any beating.
---
Kael returned after speaking with Darian, his Beta. He found her curled on the floor beside the bed.
His heart clenched.
He gently lifted her and settled her on the mattress. He sat close to her, his eyes not leaving her—which made Elara more embarrassed than she already was.
"You don't sleep on the floor here," Kael said quietly. "Not ever again."
She watched him for a long time in the low light, like she was trying to read what all of this meant through his face.
"Why are you doing this?" she asked, her voice small.
"Because you are mine. And I protect what's mine."
Elara sat up on the bed and shook her head as tears streamed down her cheeks.
"What do you want from me?" she asked him.
"Nothing." His voice broke. "I want nothing from you except for you to be happy. To be safe. To know that you are loved." He knelt beside the bed, taking her hands in his. They were so small and cold. He held them gently, afraid of hurting her or scaring her.
"I know this is hard," he continued. "I know you don't trust me yet. I know you have been hurt so badly that you don't even know what kindness feels like anymore. But I'm not going anywhere, Elara. I am going to prove to you, day after day, that you are the most important person in my world."
His eyes dropped to her lips. He wanted to kiss her so badly—but he didn't want to scare her. He kissed her hands instead before entering the bathroom.
Elara sat there, not knowing what to believe anymore. She was used to being deceived. Used to being maltreated. No one had ever cared for her.
But this man...
She knew, for sure, that she was safe here. And for the first time in twelve years, she wanted to give herself another chance. To be happy. To be loved.
---
Rumors spread across the whole pack. Some were happy that their Alpha had found his mate. Others had doubts—wondering if a human, and not just a human but a broken one, could be their Luna.
The days that followed were a careful dance of patience and progress.
Elara was like a wounded animal—flinching at sudden movements, apologizing for every perceived transgression. She thanked Kael for everything. Every meal. Every kindness. As if she expected it to be taken away at any moment.
Kael watched her struggle with a heavy heart. He was always close to her, his eyes not leaving her, always holding her. He saw the way she would curl into herself at night, her nightmares making her whimper and cry out.
The pack tried to welcome her. They brought her small gifts and offered gentle smiles. But Elara was so unused to kindness that she didn't know how to accept it. She would bow her head when someone spoke to her, apologize for using anything, even for existing.
Trying so hard to make herself as small as possible.
---
Elara was starting to believe.
Slowly. Painfully. Like a flower pushing through frozen ground.
She no longer flinched every time Kael touched her. She no longer apologized for breathing. She even smiled once—a small, hesitant thing that made Kael's heart soar.
But something was wrong.
She'd been feeling it for days. A strange heat in her chest. A buzzing under her skin. At first, she ignored it—convinced it was just anxiety, just her body remembering old wounds.
But tonight, it was worse.
She stood in front of the mirror in Kael's bathroom, staring at her reflection. Her hands were trembling. Her heart was racing. And then—
Her eyes flickered.
For just a second, they glowed.
Golden. Ancient. Divine.
Elara stumbled backward, gasping. Her hand flew to her chest. She blinked rapidly, convinced she was seeing things.
But when she looked again, they were back to normal. Brown. Human.
It was nothing, she told herself. Just a trick of the light.
But deep in her chest, something stirred. Something that had been sleeping for twenty years.
And for the first time in her life, Elara felt like she wasn't alone in her own body.
---
She didn't tell Kael.
She didn't know how.
How could she tell him that she was seeing things? That her eyes had glowed gold? That something ancient and powerful was waking up inside her?
She was just a human. Broken. Useless.
Wasn't she?
---
That night, she lay in Kael's arms, staring at the ceiling.
"Kael," she whispered.
"Mm?" He was half-asleep, his hand resting on her stomach.
"Have you ever felt like... like something was inside you? Something you didn't understand?"
He stirred, his eyes opening. "What do you mean?"
She hesitated. "Nothing. Never mind."
"Elara—"
"I'm just tired." She closed her eyes. "Go back to sleep."
He studied her for a long moment. Then he kissed her forehead and pulled her closer.
But Elara didn't sleep.
She lay awake, her hand pressed against her chest, feeling the strange warmth that wouldn't go away.
And somewhere—far away, in a cave hidden from the world—a necklace pulsed with ancient light.
She's waking up.
