CHAPTER 11: FLICKER

676 Words
Elara was full dressed, sitting by the window, staring at the rising sun. ‎ ‎"Elara?" He sat up, his voice rough with sleep. "Did you sleep at all?" ‎ ‎She shook her head. "I couldn't. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her. My mother." ‎ ‎Kael crossed the room and knelt in front of her, taking her hands. "What did she say to you?" ‎ ‎Elara hesitated. Then she whispered, "She told me to find her. She said the truth is waiting." She looked at him, her eyes filled with confusion. "I don't understand, Kael. I don't know who she is. I don't know who I am." ‎ ‎Kael was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "Then we'll find out. Together." ‎ ‎ Elara found herself in the garden, the necklace clutched in her hands. ‎ ‎She'd been avoiding it. Afraid of what it might do. Afraid of what she might see. But she couldn't avoid it forever. ‎ ‎She took a deep breath and held it up to the light. ‎ ‎The pendant was silver, delicate, with a glowing stone at its center. It was warm to the touch—warm like living skin. And when she held it, she felt a strange sense of peace. Like coming home. ‎ ‎"Who are you?" she whispered. "What are you?" ‎ ‎The necklace pulsed—once, gently—and then went still. ‎ ‎Elara stared at it, her heart racing. She was imagining things. She had to be. ‎ ‎But deep in her chest, something stirred. Something she didn't understand ‎ ‎--- ‎ ‎Lyra walked into the garden an hour later. ‎ ‎"Hey," Lyra said, sitting down beside her. "You look like you've seen a ghost." ‎ ‎Elara managed a weak smile. "Something like that." ‎ ‎"Want to talk about it?" ‎ ‎Elara was silent for a moment. Then she said, "Lyra, do you believe in destiny?" ‎ ‎Lyra tilted her head. "I believe the Moon Goddess has a plan for all of us. Why?" ‎ ‎"Because I think she might have a plan for me. And I'm not sure I like it." ‎ ‎Lyra reached over and squeezed her hand. "Whatever it is, you don't have to face it alone. That's what family is for." ‎ ‎Elara felt tears prick at her eyes. "Thank you." ‎ ‎"That's what sisters are for," Lyra said with a warm smile. ‎ ‎--- ‎ Elara stood in front of the bathroom mirror, the necklace clasped in her hands. ‎ ‎She has been feeling strange all day. A warmth in her chest. A buzzing under her skin. She couldn't explain it—but she knew it was connected to the necklace. ‎ ‎She held it up to her reflection, studying the pendant. The stone at its center seemed to glow faintly—barely noticeable, but there. ‎ ‎"Please," she whispered. "Please show me the truth." ‎ ‎The necklace pulsed. ‎ ‎And then—it happened. ‎ ‎Her eyes flickered. ‎ ‎For just a second, they glowed—golden, ancient, otherworldly. Elara gasped, stumbling backward. The necklace fell from her hands. ‎ ‎She stared at her reflection, her heart pounding. Her eyes were normal now. Brown. Human. ‎ ‎But she knew what she'd seen. ‎ ‎Her eyes had glowed gold. ‎ ‎--- ‎ ‎She didn't tell Kael about it. ‎ ‎She lay beside him, her hand pressed against her chest. The warmth was still there, pulsing gently beneath her skin. ‎ ‎What am I? she thought. What's happening to me? ‎ ‎And for the first time, she felt something. fear Not fear of someone hit her or yelling at her, a different kind of fear. ‎ ‎Fear—of what she might become. She don't know what she is, but she knows she is not just an ordinary wolf.
