Echoes of Resolve

1405 Words
As the early morning mist clung to the rolling hills of the Italian countryside, Santino Verez approached Mei-Mei's inn with a heavy heart and a mind swirling with thoughts of redemption. The gravel crunched under his shoes, a stark reminder of the weight of his mission. He had driven through the night, his resolve hardening with each mile that brought him closer to Ann. Arriving at the quaint inn, Santino paused at the door. His fists clenched, anticipating the confrontation that awaited him inside. He knocked, the sound echoing louder than intended in the quiet morning air. Mei-Mei opened the door, her presence as formidable as ever, her gaze sharp and unwelcoming. She stood firmly in the doorway, blocking the entrance like a sentinel guarding her domain. "I know she's here, Mei-Mei," Santino declared, his voice a mix of frustration and desperation. "And what if she was?" Mei-Mei replied coolly, her stance unyielding. "You're not welcome here, Santino. Don't make me remind you who you're dealing with." Santino's temper flared at the challenge. "You think I'm afraid of your Yakuza ties? I came here for Ann, and I'm not leaving without her." Mei-Mei's eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint appearing. "Try any violence here, and you'll regret it. This is my place, my rules. I put people like you in their place without breaking a sweat." The intensity of her words cut through Santino's anger, forcing him to reconsider his approach. Taking a deep breath, he changed his tone. "Listen, I... I'm here to make things right with Ann. I know I've done wrong, and I'm here to apologize and try to fix things." Mei-Mei studied him for a long moment, her expression unreadable. Finally, she stepped aside, her movements deliberate. "I'll take you to her, but remember one wrong move, and you're out. And not just out of the inn." Santino nodded, following her as they navigated the quiet hallways of the inn. The tension was noticeable, each step reminding him of the severity of his actions and the long road to potential forgiveness. They stopped at a door at the end of the corridor. Mei-Mei turned to him, her voice stern. "Behave yourself, Santino. I'm only doing this because she needs to hear whatever you've come to say." With a cautious hand, Mei-Mei knocked on the door before opening it. Ann was sitting by the window, the morning light casting shadows that played across her thoughtful face. She looked up, a surprised expression on her face followed by anger as she saw Santino standing in the doorway. “Mei-Mei…,” she said in a cold tone that made them both shiver, “…why the hell is he here? Mei-Mei opened her mouth to answer, but Santino was faster. "Ann," Santino started, his voice softer than it had been in days. I've come a long way to see you and apologize. I know I've hurt you, and I'm here to make amends, however possible." Ann's was quiet, her demeanor reserved as she considered his words. She then took one look at Mei-Mei lingered by the door, a silent guardian ensuring the peace of their delicate truce. Santino followed her gaze and looked back at Mei-Mei. “Do you mind?” Said Santino, asking her for some privacy. “No. No, I do not. Whatever you want to say to her, you can say it with me here. Unless you got a problem with that.” Said Mei-Mei, giving Santino an attitude. Both of them locked eyes and kept a death stare on each other for a couple of seconds before Ann broke the heated silence. “It’s alright Mei-Mei.” “You sure?” Ann smiled and nodded her head reassuring Mei-Mei that she would be fine. She then headed for the door but stopped with her hand on the handle. She turned and looked at him one last time. “Try anything funny and you’re out of here. Body bag included.” She said as she stepped out of the room, leaving the two to sort out their issues. “Good. Now we can talk.” Said Santino. “Let me stop you there.” Said Ann, cutting Santino off. “Do you really believe that a simple “I’m sorry” is going to be enough? After the horrible things you did to me? You must be joking. It’s going to take a lot more than that to fix things.” “I know. I know it’s something I can’t take back but tell me what to do and I’ll do it.” Pleaded Santino. “I left you a whole week ago and after all this time you come all the way here to ask ME what to do?! Are you serious?!” Santino flared up and slammed his fist against her dresser. “I came for you, didn’t I? What more do you want from me woman?!!” Ann looked at him in disgust and shook her head. “You haven’t changed at all. And here I thought you actually started to care. That something changed in you.” She walked past him and headed towards the door. “I guess I was wrong.” Without another word, she opened the door. “Please leave me alone. You’re clearly not ready to have a proper conversation or make any amends. So, leave and don’t return until you replace your ego with some sense.” Santino looked at the door and then at Ann. He saw the determination in her eyes, and he knew from experience that she was not one to be convinced through force. Especially after everything that went down in the last two weeks. He walked towards the door without saying another word but stopped in the doorway. “I am going to get a room here.” Said Santino with a serious tone. “You can’t be serious.” She said in an annoyed tone. “Oh, I’m serious alright. I’m not going back to that house without you.” He said taking one last look at her. “We’ll see about that.” She said before slamming the door in his face. Santino just stood there staring at the door, determined to get her back. Not taking a no for an answer, Santino sat in front of the door. He was going to wait for her as long as he had to. Even if it meant that he would have to sit there for days. About fifteen minutes later, Mei-Mei walked back upstairs and stopped at the end of the staircase, shocked to see Santino sitting in front of Ann’s door. “It’s not going to be as easy as you think Santino. It’s going to take a lot more than that to get Ann back.” She said as she walked towards him. “I suggest you go home and…” “I’m going to need a room.” Mei-Mei had a look of surprise plastered on her face. “You want a room here?” She asked trying to make sure she heard him right. “This IS a mafia inn, right? Don’t I fit the description?” Asked Santino as he picked up his phone to make a call. “And I want the room across from her…please.” With that, he stepped away to call Marco to bring a change of clothes and some other necessities for his stay at the inn. Mei-Mei was at a loss for words. THE Santino Verez just said “please”? “What the hell did you do to him Ann?” She whispered as she looked at the door to Ann’s room before walking off to get Santino the key to his room. Ann heard the entire thing. She was torn between being angry at him, at the audacity he had to think that he could show up here to pick her up and bring her back, and having butterflies run amok in her stomach. The thought of him looking for her all this while and doing everything he could to bring her back made her heart race. The thought of going back to that cage she called home for three days scared her. Yet, for some reason, him coming all the way here and deciding to stay at the inn to wait for her…made her mind go wild. What was she going to do?
