Elise's POV
I killed the gruesome beast. He'd told me I won before closing his eyes in death. I felt elated, relieved, but my joy was short-lived. Day break soon came and I was dragged again as loud voices filled my ears. The men stared at me with disgust, their gaze lingering on the dead man who laid limp on the ground.
However, other warriors kept dragging me, obviously unconcerned by my gender. “Can you just leave me alone? You don't have to drag me. I'll walk there by myself.” I spat, summoning up courage for the first time. Since I was walking to my death, why not do it majestically? It's my death after all, it's none of their business.
A warrior's sharp gaze landed on me, “You're really something.” he began, glaring hard at me, “You're guilty of lurking around our border, but you still had the guts to commit murder.”
“He tried to kill me!” I spat, enraged, but the pack warrior shrugged, “You're going to die anyways, why didn't you allow it? Now the Alpha has added to your punishment.” He said to my dismay, sending a shiver down my spine. What other punishment was as worse as getting beheaded. While I was lost in a trance, they dragged me forward, almost tearing the last piece of clothing I had on me.
My whole body was soaked in blood and dirt, and my thighs were in full view. I tried to cover up myself, but the warrior slapped my hands away, “Why cover it? After beheading you, you're going to be naked anyways. Let's have a last look before the crows feed on your corpse.”
My eyes burned with tears as my heart clenched with pain. I'd tried to harden my heart throughout the whole night. I thought the whole beheading crisis wasn't going to move me, but listening to someone talk about my own death almost killed me. Wanting a chance at survival, I pulled my hands away, “Just spare me.” I breathed, filled with pain, “I promise not to return. Your men killed my parents already.”
“Rouges deserve to die.” He dragged me forward, unbothered by my words. Just what crime did my kind commit? Reproducing more rouges seemed to be the greatest sin ever. My heart clenched, pain wracking through every nerve, “It you that deserves to die. You've been killing every rouge like they don't deserve to live, but the real monster is your kind!”
“Save that explanation for the Alpha.”
I was forced to my knees and my throat went dry at the sight of the flat stone before me. The loud beat of a drum filled my ears, perhaps telling me the time was near, the time for my departure was near. Crying right now was useless, so I hardened my heart and tried not to think about the pain. Loud cheers filled my ears, followed by the splash of water on my face. I shivered coldly, wanting to wrap my arms around myself, but they were tied behind me.
I stood there as the pack members satisfied their curiosity and thirst, splashing all sorts of things on me. From rotten tomatoes, to rotten fruits and to small pebbles. Their eyes were filled with hate, anger, and the only thing I could think about was carving their heart and dropping it beneath my feets. Killing them would never be enough to quench the thirst of revenge burning within me.
My hands trembled when the assault continued.
“Kill her already, stone her to death.”
“Beheading her would be better”
“How can a woman murder a young man? It shows that she's cold hearted. Someone like her would murder the whole pack.” My lips curled into a smile as my gaze lingered on the lady who spilled out the words.
“you're right.” I yelled loudly, giving her another smile. If spared, I would take years to plan my revenge and eventually destroy them all. For the pain they made me go through, they deserved to die. And for how my parents were killed? Their pups and little ones would be burnt to death.
“Enough!” The Alpha yelled, taking slow strides towards me. He stood a few meters away, “You killed one of my prisoner, why?” I bit my lips slowly and raised my head, “He tried to kill me.” my words were calm, but I was smacked across the face for staring at their Alpha. I lowered my gaze and bit my lips to muffle my cry, “You should blame your men for keeping me with a beast!”
“Do you think you have the right to argue?!”
“Then I should have allowed myself to get killed?”
“Give her two hundred strokes of the whip!” My heart raced as my gaze traveled to the long, sharp whip laced with thorns. A pack warrior stood before me, raising the whip higher, “fifty strokes would kill her.”
“Then continue whipping her corpse!”
“Do you think killing all rogues would bring peace to your kingdom?” I whispered, my gaze fixed on the Alpha, “You're making a grave mistake and I promise you, the rogues would return and make you pay for everything.” I spat before getting smacked again. My head was forcefully shoved aside as a whip landed on my back, sucking all breath from me. A loud cry escaped my lips as the whip broke my skin, “one more word and you'll get more of—”
“Father!” A soothing voice rang out as a young man took slow, elegant strides towards me. He ruffled his chestnut hair with his hands as his eyes burned with what I would call anger, “Father, this is not you. She's a woman.” He seemed calm, composed, but his ocean blue eyes were filled with flames.
His spicy scent washed over me and my mouth watered, it smelled like something I've always wanted, something I've always craved for. His presence was enough to calm me and when I slowly raised my head to meet his gaze, his eyes shone with recognition as he blurted out the words, “Mate.”
