Albreda stepped forward, her hand extended out in front of her while Dagger shifted about, a wild look to his eyes. She called to him in a calming voice, and the beast soon stilled until she was near enough to reach out and caress the horse's cheeks.
"There, there," she soothed. "You know me. It’s all right, Dagger. Everything will be fine."
She rubbed down his neck, grasping the reins with her other hand.
"What are you doing, girl?" called out a woman.
Albreda turned to see Eloise Turnwell, one of the soldier's wives.
"This is my father’s horse," Albreda replied, "and I’m going to look after him."
