CHAPTER 9 The Rescue

488 Words
I refused to sit and wait. Every minute that passed made the fear inside me grow stronger. Adrian was out there somewhere, injured or trapped, and I couldn't simply stay inside the mansion pretending everything would be fine. Nathan was the only person willing to help me. He had been one of Adrian's most trusted men, and after everything that had happened, I knew I could trust him too. “I found something,” Nathan said, staring at his phone. “What?” “A location.” My heart jumped. “Where?” “An abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city.” “Then let's go.” Nathan looked at me seriously. “Elena, this could be dangerous.” “I don't care.” “You could get hurt.” “My husband is there.” That was all I needed to say. We arrived just before midnight. The warehouse stood in complete darkness, surrounded by empty buildings and broken streetlights. The wind pushed against the rusted metal doors, creating an eerie sound. Then— BANG! A gunshot echoed through the night. I froze. Another shot followed. “Stay here!” Nathan shouted. But I couldn't. I ran toward the warehouse. “Elena!” I pushed the door open. The smell of smoke filled the air. Then I saw him. Adrian. He was sitting on a wooden chair, his hands tied behind his back. Blood stained the side of his shirt, and there was a bruise across his face. But his eyes were still unmistakably his. When he saw me, his expression changed completely. “ELENA!” He struggled against the ropes. “Get out!” I shook my head. “Not without you.” A tall man stepped from the shadows, pointing a gun directly at Adrian. “You have no idea what your husband is worth.” I slowly stepped forward. “Let him go.” The man laughed. “You think this is about love?” “No.” I looked at Adrian. “This is about something much more important.” The man raised his gun. “You'd risk your life for him?” I didn't hesitate. “Yes.” Adrian stared at me. I swallowed the fear in my throat. “I don't care about his money.” The room became silent. I continued softly, “I don't care about his secrets, his mansion, his companies, or the fortune everyone keeps talking about.” My eyes filled with tears. “I care about him.” Adrian's face changed. For the first time since I had met him, the powerful billionaire who had faced enemies without fear looked completely vulnerable. “Elena…” he whispered. Then suddenly, another gunshot exploded through the warehouse. Nathan shouted from behind me. “GET DOWN!” Everything happened at once. I dropped to the floor. The lights shattered. And in the darkness, Adrian screamed my name.
