CHAPTER 2: SHIFTING GEARS

478 Words
By 8:30 PM, the suburban house was finally quiet, though the air remained heavy with the residual, frantic energy of the day. The twins were asleep, their bedroom doors firmly shut against the quiet hallway, casting long shadows across the carpet. David sat on the living room sofa, his laptop resting heavily on his knees, his eyes burning as he reviewed a set of intricate architectural blueprints for a new residential complex. The blue light from the screen illuminated the sharp lines of his face, casting deep shadows over his expression of intense concentration. Elena walked into the room, carrying a plastic basket piled high with freshly folded laundry. She had changed out of her daytime clothes into a thin, black cotton tank top and a pair of faded gray sweatpants. As she set the basket down on the wooden coffee table, the fabric of her top pulled taut against her chest, revealing the soft, heavy swell of her breasts in the dim light of the floor lamp. David dropped his gaze from the architectural screen, his chest tightening instantly as a familiar coil of desire tightened in his gut. "The kids were absolutely wild tonight," Elena sighed, rubbing the back of her neck where the tension always accumulated. Her skin slightly flushed from the heat of the laundry room. "I feel like I haven't taken a single full breath all day. It's like I'm constantly holding it in." David closed his laptop with a definitive snap and set it aside on the floor. "Come here," he said, his voice dropping an octave, losing its professional edge and taking on a rough, demanding quality. Elena hesitated for a moment, a flicker of vulnerability and raw awareness crossing her features before she walked over and sat down beside him on the cushions. David immediately shifted his weight, pulling her back against his broad chest. His large, calloused hands found her shoulders, his thumbs digging firmly into the tight knots of her muscles. Elena let out a long, ragged sigh, her head falling back against his shoulder as her defenses crumbled under his touch. "You're completely locked up, El," he murmured, his warm breath hot against the sensitive skin of her ear. "Everything hurts," she whispered, closing her eyes. His hands moved slowly, tracing the elegant line of her collarbone before slipping beneath the thin straps tank top. The feel of her bare, warm skin under his palms changed the very oxygen in the room instantly. It wasn't a gentle, polite touch; it was heavy with a decade of deep intimacy, of knowing exactly how her body reacted to him. Elena’s breath hitched as her fingers ripped into his thigh through his trousers. The friction of their daily stress began to morph into something entirely different, a fierce, desperate need to remember exactly who they were before they became parents.
