ABANDONED IN THE ALTAR

EPISODE I Eve stood in the center of the quaint little café, the rain outside streaking the windows with silver tears, her heart pounding in a rhythm that made her dizzy. Her fingers, trembling, clutched the small bouquet of white lilies she had carried in anticipation, a symbol of the life she thought she would have with Daniel. But Daniel wasn’t there. The sight that froze her blood was worse than absence—he was leaning against the counter across the room, laughing, his hand brushing against the slender fingers of Clarisse, Eve’s step-sister. The same woman who had smiled sweetly at her for years while secretly coveting everything she had. Eve’s emerald-green eyes widened, her chest tightening, and a sharp, bitter taste filled her mouth. For a moment, the world stopped. The soft jazz playing in the background became a distant hum; the rain’s rhythm outside felt like a drumbeat of betrayal. Eve’s dark black hair fell across her face, her red lips quivering, while the bouquet slipped from her fingers, petals scattering across the polished floor like forgotten dreams. “Eve…?” A waiter’s hesitant voice barely registered as she blinked, trying to process the scene before her. No words could explain the pain, the shock, or the humiliation. She had trusted him. She had loved him. Every plan, every promise, every whispered “forever” had been a lie—or at least, a lie to her. Clarisse noticed her gaze and, with a smirk that made Eve want to scream, whispered something to Daniel. He glanced up, eyes meeting hers for a brief second—a look of guilt? Maybe. Or was it excitement? Eve couldn’t tell. She only knew that the man she had planned a lifetime with had chosen her enemy instead. Eve’s knees shook. She wanted to run, to scream, to hurl something at them, to claw the betrayal out of her chest. But she didn’t. She had always prided herself on grace, on composure, and somehow, in that moment, she forced herself to maintain it. She picked up the bouquet, straightened her posture, and turned her back to the café, her heels clicking sharply on the wet cobblestones outside. The rain soaked her hair and clothes, but Eve didn’t care. Each droplet felt like cleansing fire, burning away the illusions, the trust, the love she had invested in someone who never deserved it. By the time she reached her apartment, her hands were numb, and the tears had merged with the rain. She opened the suitcase she had hastily packed weeks ago, determined to leave behind everything that tied her to this life. Old photos, letters, and gifts—all reminders of a love that had betrayed her—were stuffed into boxes she would never open again. Her phone buzzed. A message from Daniel: “I’m sorry, Eve. I never meant for it to happen this way.” She stared at the screen, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. Anger, hurt, and disbelief warred inside her, but finally, she deleted the message. Deleted him. Deleted the past. “I will not cry. I will not fall apart,” she whispered to herself, staring at her reflection in the mirror. Tall, beautiful, with striking forest-green eyes, a perfect slender waist, and lips the color of blood—Eve looked like a goddess betrayed but unbroken. Packing her last few belongings, she made a decision that would shape the rest of her life: she was leaving this city, this heartbreak, and this betrayal behind. Tomorrow, she would start anew in a different state, chasing a future that belonged to her alone. As she lay in bed that night, rain tapping gently against the window, Eve made a silent vow. I will rise. I will thrive. And I will never—ever—let anyone break me like this again. Little did she know, the universe had a way of testing vows—and Eve’s journey was only beginning.
