EPISODE 4
The café smelled of roasted beans and burnt caramel—comforting, familiar, safe.
Eve liked it that way.
She stood behind the counter, apron tied snugly around her slender waist, dark hair pulled into a low ponytail. Her graduation certificate was still fresh in her mind, the memory of applause and tears replaying like a secret she carried close to her chest. Life had returned to routine too quickly—early shifts, smiling customers, Nick’s dramatic flirting with strangers, and Nicki’s sharp tongue keeping everyone in check.
Normal.
Too normal.
Nick leaned against the counter, tapping on his phone. “If I don’t become rich in the next five years, I’m marrying rich. Gender negotiable.”
Nicki snorted. “Focus on wiping that table before I wipe you.”
Eve laughed softly, shaking her head. For the first time in a long while, laughter didn’t feel forced.
Then her phone vibrated.
Once.
She ignored it.
It vibrated again.
Something tightened in her chest.
She glanced at the screen—and froze.
Unknown Number.
Her fingers hesitated before she stepped away from the counter, heart pounding as she answered.
“Hello?”
“Good afternoon. Am I speaking with Evelyn Carter?”
Her breath caught. “Yes… this is she.”
“This is OrionTech Human Resources. We’re calling regarding your application.”
The world tilted.
Nick’s voice faded. The café noise dissolved into a distant hum.
“Yes,” Eve whispered, gripping the phone tighter.
“We were impressed by your academic record and project portfolio. We’d like to invite you for an interview.”
Her knees weakened.
“I—” She swallowed hard. “I’d love that.”
The woman on the line continued, calm and professional. “The interview is scheduled for Monday, 9 a.m. Our headquarters. Please be punctual.”
When the call ended, Eve stood there, stunned, phone pressed to her ear long after the line went dead.
Nick was the first to notice. “Why do you look like someone just proposed or threatened your life?”
Nicki’s eyes narrowed. “Eve. Talk.”
Eve turned slowly, her lips trembling—then she smiled. A wide, disbelieving smile that broke into tears.
“They called me,” she said. “OrionTech called me.”
For a second, there was silence.
Then Nick screamed.
He jumped onto a chair, arms raised. “OUR GIRL IS ABOUT TO BE RICH AND UNAVAILABLE!”
Nicki rushed forward, hugging Eve tightly. “I knew it,” she whispered. “I knew they’d see you.”
But later that night, when the excitement settled and the apartment grew quiet, doubt crept in.
Eve lay awake staring at the ceiling, memories slipping through the cracks of her joy.
Her ex-fiancé’s voice. You’re not ambitious enough. Her stepmother’s laughter. You’re just passing through.
What if she wasn’t enough?
What if she failed?
She rolled onto her side, clutching her phone.
“I won’t beg,” she whispered to herself. “I won’t shrink.”
Monday came too fast.
The OrionTech building rose like a glass fortress—cold, massive, intimidating. Eve stood outside, smoothing her navy-blue blazer, heart racing. She felt small… but determined.
Inside, everything was sleek and silent. She followed the receptionist, heels clicking against polished floors, her reflection staring back at her from every surface.
Then the elevator doors opened.
And somewhere above, in a top-floor office, a man stood by a window—tall, broad-shouldered, jaw clenched, eyes colder than steel.
Adrian Blackwood.
CEO of OrionTech.
A man who despised distractions. A man who hated weakness. A man whose life was about to collide with Eve’s—
Whether either of them was ready or not.
And fate, cruel and patient, was just beginning to smile.
