Mrs Smith POV,
This statement got me to disintegrate with shock, fear, and curiosity. Well, it wasn't possible for him to know that unless I told him, because not even his father or any other living being knows this secret. So he might just be pulling a trick to get his way, I thought to myself.
He continued, in anger,
What, you're just going to walk out and pretend that you have no knowledge of what I'm talking about? You can go doing what is most important to you. After all, that is what all stepmothers do best. Not only do they ignore you when you need them the most, but also, when you commit an offense against them, they won't think twice about toasting you away like a piece of s**t.
Henry, for God's sake, watch words, I am your mother, and everyone in this country knows that. You're only saying those things because of the state of your mind. I told him
But this was no longer my Henry because he didn't care if he was hurting my feelings. In fact, I'm sure he wanted to see my heart bleed with guilt, so he continued,
You know Mrs Smith, I could have gone on believing you for the rest of my life, even if everyone else didn't. Because for me, you were the perfect Mom, flawless, honest, caring, and loving. I had no reason to doubt you, but when you couldn't forgive my only offense against you, I started to think otherwise.
The nature of motherhood states that a mother can endure anything for the sake of her child. Sadly, my own mother vowed never to forgive me. Not only did you not care to recognize all my efforts, but you ghosted my every presence.
Luckily for me, the discovery of that DNA results was the biggest clue to why you were treating me this way. Dad told me that he had never requested that test. Which meant that it was all of you doing. Because you wanted to be sure that the bastard that his mistress was having was your husband's. Henry explained.
I looked at him with a sigh of relief. At least my secret was still safe.
I think he must have misinterpreted my expression because he suddenly pulled out the folder and slapped it on the table, indicating that that was his evidence. He then added,
I'm going to tell Dad and everyone that I forced myself on you. Perhaps whatever punishment I receive will be enough to compensate for my crime against you. Perchance that will give you the justice you seek, and then you will be happy.
Her name was Susan, she was beautiful and kind too. She loved you so much, and before she died, she made me promise not to let you know about your birth. She thought that not telling you could save you the pain of knowing the kind of things she did to have you in her life. I explained.
I made up this story to distract him from letting his father in on everything that happened, and it did work because the next minute, I saw him collapse on his bed in sorrow. I took advantage of this and continued,
Henry, I promise to work on things between us from now on. Please just leave your father out of this. You've seen how messy our marriage is already, If he ever finds out that I told you about this, he will be furious at me.
I have had enough. Just leave now! He shouted at me.
I left with the DNA the result, He was right. There is not even a one percent chance of us being related. This was true because his father's ancestors were bought from a very far away land to work as slaves in Rocksville long ago.
Surprise! I'm here, sweetie, just like I told you, so what are we beginning with? I can't wait for us to begin. I said with enthusiasm. But Henry was a completely different person at this moment.
"Thank you for coming. Could you please wait outside with the rest of the team?
Another thing is Mrs Smith. This is a work environment, and I request that you address me formally. You may leave now."
I thought that he was kidding, but this silent treatment went on for two whole weeks.
At work, he acted like a cold-hearted boss towards me, while at home, I was treated like a ghost. We could only have conversations when Jacob was around. So, I sought ways to make amends.
There was one thing in this world that Henry could never ignore no matter how angry he was. And that was my special homemade Italian Lasagna, with fillings such as ragù, béchamel sauce, vegetables, cheeses, and seasonings and spices.
After hours of working in the kitchen, I finally made the perfect lasagna for my son. I wanted to surprise him, so I took it with me to his office an hour before lunch break. When I presented it to him, he barely looked at it. I put it on his desk like he ordered.
"Thank you, ma'am." Was all I got after cutting off my sleep and working myself out all morning. My son, who normally could applaud me, and say, "I am the best mother in the world, only said,"Thank you ma'am"
At lunchtime I visited the cafeteria for the first time. While roaming around, I noticed that only the less privileged came here, while the rich didn't. From that scene, a business idea popped into my head. What if our products were also affordable by the poor?
I was wondering about this when my eyes fell on a group of girls eating some food that seemed very tasty. Upon a closer look, it turned out to be my lasagna. Not only did he not appreciate my effort, but he toasted away my food? I was so angry that I went to confront him in his office.
Thankfully for him, he wasn't here.
His secretary said that he was having lunch with some clients.
After work, I headed straight home, prepared to put an end to this ghosting game.
Young man, we need to talk. I said as I entered his room.
What was the meaning of that charade you put up at work today? What is your problem? You blow me up each time I try doing something nice for you. What the heck is your problem, Henry? I demand an answer right now!
"Come on, Mrs Smith, I am only giving you a taste of your dish. I don't want to take advantage of you again.
Henry, what are you talking about? I thought we decided that that was a mistake?
Yes, that was the agreement, and I stayed committed to it until I overheard you telling Dad that you didn't want to be alone with me because I might take advantage of you. Do you think that you are the only person who's suffering from that truma?
I am, too. I have been suffering in silence. All I wanted was a mother to cry to, but you can't be that because you're not my mother, neither do you love me that much too!
Henry said as he wept!
That's not true, sweetie. I do love you regardless of how you came into this world.
I sat next to him and held his hands as I made my confession,
Henry, I love you. l love you so much, more than a mother should love her son, and that's the reason I tried to stay away. I developed feelings for you after the incident on the night of the anniversary.
