Episode 4: "The Pact"

1030 Words
Cold Open ‎ ‎The neighbors stand silently outside the Morgans’ home, their faces half-lit by flickering streetlamps. A hush covers the lane, as if even the wind is holding its breath. ‎ ‎Inside, Lily watches them from the window. Her father stands behind her—expression blank, as if sleepwalking. Rachel sits in the armchair, pale and shivering. ‎ ‎The Thornes don’t knock. ‎ ‎They wait. ‎ ‎And then Evelyn says, softly but clearly, as if she knows they’re listening: ‎ ‎> “You don’t have to be afraid, Lily. We’ve been waiting for you.” ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎--- ‎ ‎Act I: A Family Divided ‎ ‎Sebastian and Evelyn are invited in—Daniel insists on it, strangely eager. They move with practiced grace, ignoring the tension in the air. “This is a courtesy,” Sebastian explains. “Not a threat.” ‎ ‎Evelyn places a folded letter on the coffee table, sealed in crimson wax. “Your family has been chosen. The lineage is strong. Rare, even.” She looks directly at Lily. “We’re not here to take—we’re here to offer.” ‎ ‎Lily is furious. “You’ve been feeding on people. You bit my mother.” ‎ ‎Evelyn looks to Rachel. “Only to help her transition. The bite is not a curse—it’s a key. She’s stronger now. She’ll see soon.” ‎ ‎Rachel doesn’t speak. Her skin is growing paler by the hour. ‎ ‎Sebastian addresses Daniel: “This place isn’t a neighborhood. It’s a sanctuary. A community built to endure. Time doesn’t move the same here. Hemlock Lane was founded for those who outlive it.” ‎ ‎Daniel’s voice wavers: “You want us to join you?” ‎ ‎Evelyn smiles, fangs flashing briefly. “We want your daughter.” ‎ ‎ ‎--- ‎ ‎Act II: The Offer ‎ ‎The Thornes reveal the truth: every 100 years, the coven must bring in fresh blood to renew the pact that keeps them hidden and ageless. The neighborhood—sealed in its own bubble of time—feeds off the energy and vitality of newcomers. Most are taken quietly. But now and then, a rare soul is offered a choice. ‎ ‎Lily is one of those rare souls. ‎ ‎“Strong mind. Strong will. A good vessel,” Sebastian says. “You can live forever. Never age. Never suffer. Imagine what you could become.” ‎ ‎Lily’s hands are shaking. “What happens if I say no?” ‎ ‎Evelyn sighs. “Then we take what we need. You’ve already been marked. Your mother’s transformation has begun. If you refuse, she dies. Slowly. And your father will follow.” ‎ ‎Lily looks to her parents—Daniel seems lost, distant. Rachel’s eyes briefly flash red before she buries her face in her hands. ‎ ‎“They’ll change with or without you,” Evelyn says. “But they won’t survive the change without your acceptance.” ‎ ‎The clock ticks toward midnight. ‎ ‎ ‎--- ‎ ‎Act III: Fight or Flee ‎ ‎Lily runs. Out of the house. Down the street. But Hemlock Lane is no longer laid out like before. ‎ ‎The road loops. ‎ ‎Every house she passes stares back at her with cold windows. Neighbors watch from porches, motionless. Some are barefoot, others dressed in nightgowns from another century. None blink. ‎ ‎She pounds on door after door—no one answers. ‎ ‎Eventually, she stumbles back home, breathless. The Thornes are gone. The letter remains. ‎ ‎She opens it. ‎ ‎> “We’ll return at midnight. Your answer must be given then. We hope you’ll choose wisely. Not for us. For your blood.” ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎--- ‎ ‎Act IV: The Bloodline ‎ ‎Lily confronts her mother—“Why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t you fight?” ‎ ‎Rachel, trembling, finally speaks: “I couldn’t stop it. Once they bite, they’re inside you. But they said if you say yes… we’ll stay together. We’ll be a family. Forever.” ‎ ‎Daniel is worse now—sweating, mumbling to himself, pacing in circles. ‎ ‎That night, Lily returns to Eleanor’s journal and reads something she hadn’t seen before. A final note scribbled in the back: ‎ ‎> “They feed through the ones we love. They make us choose. But their power is tied to the oldest relic—their roots. Break it, and they can bleed.” ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Lily looks at the clock. ‎ ‎11:58. ‎ ‎ ‎--- ‎ ‎Final Scene: The Choice ‎ ‎The Thornes return. ‎ ‎This time, they don’t wait outside. The door opens on its own. The neighbors file in silently, lining the walls like shadows. ‎ ‎Evelyn holds a goblet—ornate, ancient, filled with thick, dark blood. ‎ ‎Sebastian steps forward. ‎ ‎> “One sip, Lily. That’s all it takes. Your family survives. You become one of us. No more hiding. No more fear.” ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Lily walks forward. The house is silent except for the ticking of the clock. ‎ ‎11:59. ‎ ‎She takes the goblet. ‎ ‎Looks down at it. ‎ ‎Then raises it. ‎ ‎A beat. ‎ ‎Then—she hurls it to the floor. ‎ ‎It shatters. ‎ ‎The room erupts in a chorus of inhuman snarls. ‎ ‎Lily pulls the antique locket from Evelyn’s earlier “gift” and holds it up—it glows red in her hand. She smashes it against the fireplace. ‎ ‎A scream fills the house—not from Lily, not from the Thornes—but from everywhere. A force erupts through the room like a wind of glass, knocking over furniture, shattering windows. ‎ ‎And in the chaos—Lily grabs her parents. ‎ ‎“Run.”
