Chapter 10: The Ties That Bind

The sun dipped low on the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple as Xhiah and Glenn gathered supplies for their imminent journey to the peak of Mount Mierlitte. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation, the weight of their mission pressing down on them, but it was balanced by an unyielding sense of determination. “Let’s check the forest,” Glenn suggested as they stepped out of the cave, the cool evening breeze wrapping around them. “There are medicinal herbs and materials we can use for potions.” “Right! I remember the ones we spotted during our training,” Xhiah replied, her excitement ignited by the thought of exploring the woods. “And we can also look for some food.” As they entered the forest, the world around them transformed. The trees towered high, their leaves whispering secrets in the gentle wind, and the underbrush rustled with life. Xhiah felt invigorated by the vibrant energy of nature surrounding her, each step a reminder of her strength and purpose. “Stay close,” Glenn cautioned, scanning the area for any signs of danger. “We don’t want to attract unwanted attention, especially after that herald showed up.” Xhiah nodded, her heart still racing from the encounter. “I know. I can’t shake the feeling that we’re being watched.” They moved deeper into the woods, searching for herbs and edible plants. Xhiah found herself smiling as she spotted a cluster of vibrant blue flowers growing near a fallen log. “Look, Glenn! Bluebell flowers!” she exclaimed, kneeling down to examine them. “These are perfect for making potions!” “Good eye,” he replied, crouching beside her. “We’ll need as many as we can gather.” As they collected the flowers, Xhiah felt a sense of peace washing over her. The forest was alive with sounds—the chirping of birds, the rustle of leaves, and the distant babbling of a stream. It reminded her of the days spent playing in the fields near her village, before the darkness had begun to creep into her life. “Do you think we’ll be able to defeat the demon?” she asked suddenly, her voice barely above a whisper. Glenn paused, looking thoughtful. “I believe we can. But it’s not just about strength. It’s about understanding your powers and how to harness them. That’s why this gathering at the peak is so important.” “Right.” She nodded, feeling a mix of anxiety and determination. “I just wish I knew more about my past, about the goddesses and what they expect from me.” “Perhaps the scroll we found holds more answers,” Glenn suggested. “It mentioned the gathering of light. We’ll learn more when we’re there.” Xhiah smiled at him, grateful for his unwavering support. “You always know how to calm my nerves.” Glenn chuckled, a warm sound that resonated through the trees. “That’s what I’m here for, right? To be your guardian and your friend.” Their playful banter eased the tension, and they continued gathering herbs, moving deeper into the heart of the forest. They collected various plants, dried fruits, and nuts, each item carefully placed into their packs. After a while, they paused by the stream to take a break, the sound of water flowing over rocks providing a soothing background melody. Xhiah knelt down to wash her hands in the cool water, feeling refreshed. “Xhiah,” Glenn said suddenly, his tone serious. “Have you ever thought about what happens if we succeed?” Her heart skipped a beat at the thought. “If we succeed… then I’ll embrace my powers, and we’ll stop the demon from taking what’s mine. But I don’t know what that looks like.” “What if you become the protector of this land? A goddess in your own right?” Glenn suggested, his eyes shining with possibility. “The goddesses left this world for a reason, but perhaps it’s your destiny to take their place.” Xhiah met his gaze, her heart racing at the weight of his words. “That’s a lot to take in, Glenn. I’ve always felt like I was meant for something greater, but to think of actually becoming a goddess… it’s overwhelming.” “Just remember, you don’t have to do it alone,” he reassured her. “I’ll be by your side, no matter what happens. We’re in this together.” Feeling a surge of warmth, Xhiah smiled at him. “Thank you, Glenn. Your belief in me means more than you know.” They sat in companionable silence for a moment, the forest enveloping them in its serenity. Xhiah found herself lost in thought, contemplating the possibilities of her future. Would she truly be able to wield the powers of the goddesses? Would she be able to protect the people she loved? Suddenly, a rustling in the bushes snapped her from her reverie. Glenn stood up, alert. “Did you hear that?” Xhiah nodded, her heart racing as she scanned the area. “Yeah, I did.” Before they could react, a creature burst from the underbrush—a wild boar, its eyes wild and nostrils flaring. It charged toward them, anger radiating from its body. “Xhiah, get back!” Glenn shouted, positioning himself between her and the beast. Without thinking, Xhiah instinctively stepped forward, her hands glowing with light. “I can handle this!” “Wait, Xhiah!” Glenn called, but it was too late. The boar charged, and Xhiah felt the surge of energy coursing through her veins. “Light of the goddesses, heed my call!” she shouted, and a beam of radiant light shot from her hands, striking the boar mid-charge. The creature skidded to a halt, startled by the sudden blast of energy. It snorted and backed away, the light illuminating the area around them. “Xhiah!” Glenn exclaimed, his eyes wide with awe and concern. “That was incredible!” “I—I didn’t even think about it!” Xhiah stammered, breathless from the surge of power. “It just happened!” The boar, now hesitant, seemed to recognize the light as it began to retreat. With one last snort, it turned and disappeared back into the woods, leaving them in stunned silence. “Did you see that?” Glenn asked a mixture of excitement and concern on his face. “You were amazing!” Xhiah’s heart raced a mixture of exhilaration and fear coursing through her. “But what if I can’t control it? What if I hurt someone?” “Then you train,” Glenn said firmly. “You can’t let fear hold you back. This is part of your journey—learning to wield your powers responsibly.” Xhiah took a deep breath, grounding herself. “You’re right. I can’t let my fears control me. I need to embrace this.” As they finished gathering their supplies and made their way back to the cave, Xhiah felt a newfound sense of purpose. She was beginning to understand that her powers were not just gifts but responsibilities—tools she needed to learn how to wield for the good of others. Later that night, as they settled down in their cave, Xhiah pulled out the ancient scroll and spread it on the ground before them. “Let’s study this more closely,” she suggested, her fingers tracing the faded ink. Glenn leaned closer, his brow furrowing as he read through the text. “It talks about rituals and gatherings, but it also mentions the significance of bonding—of trust and unity among those who wield the light.” “Bonding?” Xhiah repeated, intrigued. “What do you mean?” “It suggests that those destined to wield the light must form strong connections with others who share the same goal,” he explained. “It emphasizes the importance of loyalty, friendship, and love.” Xhiah felt warmth bloom in her chest at his words, realizing how true they were. Their journey together had forged a bond that made them stronger—both as individuals and as allies. “What do you think we should do?” she asked, glancing up at him. “Perhaps we should create a ritual of our own,” he suggested. “A way to solidify our bond and prepare for what’s to come.” Xhiah smiled at the idea. “That sounds perfect. What do you have in mind?” Glenn thought for a moment before responding. “We could gather items from the forest that represent our journey—symbols of our connection to nature and to each other.” “Like what?” she asked, intrigued. “Things like the bluebell flowers we found, stones from the stream, or even feathers from the creatures we encounter,” he proposed. “Then we could perform a small ceremony, invoking the light and pledging our commitment to each other and our mission.” Xhiah felt a rush of excitement. “I love that idea! It will remind us of our purpose and keep us grounded as we face the challenges ahead.” “Let’s do it then!” Glenn replied, enthusiasm shining in his eyes. “Tomorrow, we’ll collect our items and hold the ritual under the full moon. It will be a symbol of our bond.” “Agreed!” Xhiah said, her heart swelling with gratitude. “Thank you for being here with me, Glenn. I couldn’t do this without you.” He smiled warmly, the moonlight illuminating his features. “And I wouldn’t want to do this without you.” As they settled in for the night, the weight of their mission felt lighter, buoyed by their shared determination and friendship. Xhiah drifted into a peaceful sleep, dreaming of the light that awaited her and the bonds that would guide her on her journey to become the protector she was meant to be.
