The Shadow Broker

Lena didn’t flinch. Instead, she crossed her arms and studied the man in front of her. He was tall, built like a fighter, and his voice carried the weight of someone who had seen too much. The dim light from the flickering bulb above barely illuminated his sharp features. “I take it you’re the welcoming committee?” she asked, keeping her tone casual. The man let out a low chuckle. “That depends. Are you here for business or trouble?” Lena smirked. “Depends on what you have to offer.” He motioned toward a small table in the center of the room. A single laptop sat there, its screen displaying encrypted messages and blockchain transactions in real-time. She recognized the interface immediately—this was someone who knew their way around the digital underworld. “I know why you’re here,” the man said, gesturing for her to sit. “But you’re poking at a system that doesn’t like outsiders.” Lena remained standing. “And yet, here we are.” The man sighed, rubbing his temples. “You’re persistent. That can either make you rich or get you killed.” She leaned in slightly. “Then let’s talk about the first option.” --- Across the city, Ethan Steele watched the exchange from a private feed, his fingers steepled in thought. “She’s bold,” Xavier murmured beside him. Ethan didn’t take his eyes off the screen. “She’s reckless. There’s a difference.” Xavier hesitated. “You think she’ll take the deal?” Ethan’s lips curved into a slow, knowing smile. “Lena Carter isn’t the type to take what’s offered. She’s here to rewrite the terms.” --- Back in the abandoned building, Lena scanned the laptop screen. Transactions, patterns, cryptic messages—something was here. Something bigger than just a warning. “You’ve been tracking Steele,” she noted, eyes flicking to the man. He raised an eyebrow. “And what if I have?” Lena tapped her fingers against the table. “Then we might have a common interest.” The man studied her, his expression unreadable. Then, slowly, he nodded. “Alright, Carter. Let’s see if you can keep up.”
