Lines in the Sand

Lena didn’t have time for hesitation. She pulled up a chair and sat across from the mysterious broker, her eyes locked onto his. He was assessing her, just as she was him, both aware that in their world, trust was a fragile, fleeting thing. “I don’t work for free,” he finally said, fingers tapping against the laptop. “You want access to my intel? Then we make a deal.” Lena smirked. “And what exactly do you want from me?” The man leaned forward. “You’ve got Ethan Steele’s attention. That makes you valuable. There are things even he doesn’t know—things buried deep in The Grid. I need someone on the inside.” She arched an eyebrow. “You want me to spy on him?” “I want you to survive.” A tense silence stretched between them. Lena wasn’t naive—this wasn’t an offer made out of goodwill. But she needed information, and right now, this man was the only one willing to give it. “Fine,” she said. “But I don’t play blind. You tell me everything you know first.” The broker studied her, then turned the laptop toward her. A series of files blinked onto the screen, labeled with encrypted codes. He clicked one open, revealing transaction records, off-the-book crypto movements, and a name she hadn’t expected to see. Lena’s stomach tightened. This changes everything. --- Ethan Steele wasn’t one to be caught off guard, but tonight, he was. The data breach, the sudden shift in Lena’s movements—someone else was playing the game. Xavier placed a phone on the table. “She’s in deep.” Ethan picked it up, scanning the messages. “She’s taking risks she doesn’t understand.” Xavier exhaled. “Should we intervene?” Ethan’s jaw clenched. He knew Lena wouldn’t back down, not when she was this close to something big. And yet, for the first time, uncertainty crept into his mind. “No,” he said finally. “Let’s see just how far she’s willing to go.” --- Lena’s hands hovered over the laptop keyboard. What she had just learned wasn’t just dangerous—it was explosive. She looked up at the broker. “If I do this, I need one more thing.” He raised an eyebrow. “And that is?” “A way out. If things go south, I’m not going down with this.” The broker’s lips curved into a knowing smile. “Smart girl.” The deal was made. But in this game, every deal came with a price.
