Deeper Into the Web

Lena stared at the message on her phone, her fingers tightening around the device. Be careful, Lena. You don’t know what you’re getting into. Her instincts screamed at her—this was no coincidence. Whoever sent the message knew exactly what she was doing. And more importantly, they didn’t want her to continue. Instead of fear, adrenaline pumped through her veins. She had been in situations like this before, back when she worked for the FBI’s cybercrime unit. The difference? Back then, she had backup. Now, she was on her own. Lena took a deep breath, forcing herself to think logically. Her car was still parked in the rooftop garage, the city lights reflecting off the windshield. If she was being watched, there were two possibilities—either someone had hacked into her phone or they were physically nearby. She turned on her VPN and routed her phone’s connection through multiple servers before opening a secure tracing program. Whoever had sent the message, she was going to find them. A moment later, her screen flashed: Signal bounced from multiple locations. Origin unknown. Lena exhaled in frustration. Whoever they were, they knew what they were doing. --- Meanwhile, across the city, Ethan Steele leaned back in his chair, watching the flickering data feed on his monitor. His office, a sleek penthouse overlooking the skyline, was dimly lit, the glow from multiple screens casting shadows across his sharp features. “She didn’t take the warning,” Xavier’s voice crackled through the speakers. Ethan smirked, swirling the glass in his hand before taking a slow sip. “Of course, she didn’t. Lena Carter doesn’t strike me as the type to back down.” Xavier sighed. “She’s smart. Too smart. If she keeps pushing, she’ll uncover more than she should.” Ethan set the glass down and leaned forward. “That’s what makes this interesting.” There was a pause before Xavier spoke again. “You sure about this? If she digs too deep—” “I’ll handle it,” Ethan cut him off. “For now, we watch.” --- Lena drove through the city streets, her mind racing. She needed more information. And there was only one place that might have it—The Grid. A hidden club known only to those who lived in the world of digital secrets, The Grid was where hackers, crypto moguls, and underground financiers converged. It was also the one place Ethan Steele’s name came up more than once. Pulling up to an unmarked building in the warehouse district, Lena killed the engine and stepped out. A single neon symbol—two interlocking circles—glowed above the entrance. The doorman gave her a long look before nodding slightly. She had been here before. Inside, the air was thick with energy. Screens flashed with market trends, crypto exchanges, and live hacking feeds. The club pulsed with a steady beat, and conversations in hushed tones filled the air. Lena walked straight to the back, where she knew she’d find Ace, an old friend and one of the best digital trackers she knew. Ace looked up from his workstation, his eyebrows raising. “Didn’t think I’d see you again.” Lena slid into the seat across from him. “I need a trace on an encrypted message.” Ace leaned forward, intrigued. “Who pissed you off this time?” She pulled out her phone and placed it between them. “That’s what I need you to tell me.”
