The Web Tightens

Lena’s breath came in steady, measured puffs as she navigated the dimly lit streets. She could still feel the weight of the encrypted device in her pocket. Whatever was on it, she knew it would either expose the truth—or bury her in it. She turned a corner and froze. A sleek black car idled at the curb, its tinted windows masking whoever was inside. She had seen this car before. Ethan’s. The passenger door clicked open, an unspoken invitation. She hesitated only for a moment before slipping inside. Ethan didn’t look at her right away. He stared ahead, fingers tapping against the steering wheel. “You took a risk,” he finally said. Lena smirked. “So did you, by coming here.” His jaw tightened. “You have no idea what you’re up against, Lena. Steele isn’t just running an operation. He’s rewriting the entire financial system from the ground up. If you keep pushing, you won’t just be in danger—you’ll be erased.” She pulled the device from her pocket and held it up. “Then tell me what’s on this.” Ethan exhaled sharply. “Where did you get that?” “Someone who thinks Steele isn’t the only one playing this game.” Silence stretched between them before Ethan reached into the center console and pulled out a portable decryptor. “We do this my way,” he said. “Or not at all.” Lena hesitated, then placed the device in his hand. “Fine. But if you lie to me again, I walk.” Ethan nodded, his gaze finally locking onto hers. “Then let’s find out who’s really pulling the strings.” --- Xavier watched from a rooftop across the street, his sniper rifle resting idly against the railing. He spoke into his earpiece. “They’re in.” A distorted voice responded on the other end. “Good. Keep them close.” Xavier smirked. “I don’t think that’ll be a problem.” As Ethan and Lena drove off into the night, he whispered to himself, “The real game is just beginning.”
