That afternoon we sat in the living room. The kids had been asked to be home by five so we’d have a family meeting. Randy asked if it was all right that he bring Susan. Janet had said “Of course.” Susan was a thin blond with big blue eyes and a warm smile.
“Wow,” Randy said as he sat down. “What’s the occasion?”
“Nothing special, but Shelby has a question she wants to ask you.”
Gerry looked up at me with a question in her eyes. Randy sat back as Susan looked from face to face. They were all waiting.
“It’s not a really big thing, but it will probably affect you more than us.” I paused. “There’s a reception after the concert tonight and I’m sure everyone will be there. I’d like your mother to come with me as my guest. I know it will cause a lot of talk, like that question at my lecture,
